welding advice

Post by tom lad »

hi
been given this to try repair/ weld
it part of the pickup hitch from a ford 8100
Image
not sure if its weldable ??
gonna try with the mig I think
can only butt weld it together because it has to slide / telescope thru the gland nut .
Image
there don't seem to be that much on the other end of the rod , opposite end to the eye , to stop it pulling straight thru ?
wonder what sort of weight its designed to lift , seems a thin rod to me .

Best make a new one with a new bit of bar and screw cut both ends with new nuts. Will be far stronger than weld as it will have to lift possibly a 12 tonne trailer or more.

you're prob right , the eye end has been welded / presumably from new , cant tell how the other end is formed . I didn't remove the bits .
the broken bit has that coarse snapped grey cast look to me

I will measure and check but from memory its about 12 mm / 1/2 " bar .
will have a play next time i'm in the workshop.

Agree with making a new one. The old one has fatigued metal and will crack along side of the weld when it fails a second time. Dandy Dave!

Weld it, and then paint it with the paint on your bench. If it breaks you can tell everyone it was because of the John Deer paint!

The problem with Mig/Mag welding is to burn it deep enough in the mother material. The weld can look perfect but be worthless.
You soon find out.
