Archive film of making a Ransomes plough

Post by oehrick »

I've only just realised this item in the East Anglian Film Archive is available online now, it features (amongst other stuff) an RSJ plough being made in the 1950's starting at 29:50 I couldn't get it to fast forward.

http://www.eafa.org.uk/catalogue/552

Another on RSJ machinery in the late 50s is at http://www.eafa.org.uk/catalogue/811 Mostly empire blue powered but for those of a delicate nature the odd grey peril and other toxic userpers do creep in front of the camera.................

A search of the archive will find many other interesting films

Finally from another forum, for those who have strong views on Lucas electrics http://www3.telus.net/bc_triumph_registry/smoke.htm will either amuse or annoy

What a great pictures. Thanks.

I notice a toolbar behind a major with spring cultivator just like the Fergie model. We talked about in another topic.
Kind regards, Henk

I checked with Anthony Clare about the Fergy and Ransomes tool bars and no, Ransomes did not make Fergy equipment. Of course, some Ransomes stuff built for the Dexta would fit but when used would cause a Ferguson to rear up because of the different mast height.

And just to say that I used to have Farmers Glory for breakfast before catching the stage coach to school!

I compared the two with a picture I have and the ones in the flick.
Seems your right Brian. As always of course. And my mistake.

The system looks the same with springs and the toolbars and the 3 point link system, but there are much differences.
Ransomes uses square bars and clamps to connect the tools as Fergie profile lines with holes to connect the tools.
The pyramid for the 3p linkage has a connection in front and under the bars for the arms as the Fergie has them above the bars. The Dexta and the Major have different pyramids in height and a slightly different construction.

Seems both brands did a bit of spying. Just like Toyota and Mazda did on their cars.

I shall tell my friend tonight that he has a real Fergie cultivator and not a Ransomes.
Kind regards, Henk

I love that bit of the beams being bent round - and that shear for cutting the wheel disks out would be handy
