"NZR J class (1939)"

Post by The Swanndri Guy »

Smoking can be fun, especially when you have TWO steam engines running on the track, both running on COAL and not a "wanna be environmentalist" is sight  .They both came past half an hour ago at the back of the farm, and return at 8.30 tonight.Would have gotten more pictures, but my camera's batteries went flat :curse: TSG.

Nice pictures, TSG. Can you tell us more about them?

There used to be a steam engine that went past my house every weekend, but it hasn't run for a couple of years now. Its boiler was fired by used engine oil

8) Cool Man. I got to watch the engineer and fireman fire up, and also ride in the cab of a steamer several years ago. He was also training several wanna be engineers. After watching, I relized that it takes a lot more mechanical abillity to run a Swing Shovel, as the steam locomotive controls are simple in comparison. It was raining that day and I let the old shovel sit. Dandy Dave!

Both engines are NZR J class(1939). 40 were made by North British Locomotive Works, Glasgow ,Scotland in 1939 and were assembled in New Zealand. I think they were based on the earlier K class but used Baker valve gear from the USA. 12 were converted to run on oil and are refered to as Jb class. Were used upto the late 50's if not till mid 60's.Still several in operation, and somemore being restored.I'm not sure if they were unique to New Zealand as they were refered to as the "New Mountain Type locomotive", I guess they were used on quite steep inclines like the "Raurimu Spiral" and on branch lines off the main trunk line. TSG.

Kev, I took 9 photos of which 7 ended up with that BBQ, and no its not mine as it belongs to some contractors that are building a serice road parallel to the railway track. As we all know, having a good feed/lunch at work has allways been a priority for NZR staff, and these guys are no exception! Oscar, most our Diesel/Electric trains are pre 1965 too,I'll get some pictures of them too. :buddies: TSG.

Careful, I did my trade with the NZ railway workshops, maybe the track gangs eat well!
I don't know if I would agree about the 'pre 1965', more like post 1965.
I'll ask my brother, as he is a train driver based in Hamilton
Great photos anyway.

I'll try and get some more pictures, including some of the newer engines that I think that came from WA (The ones that had to have there turbo's modifyed so they could go through tunnels)and of the "new" Kiwi rail ones when they get on the tracks .Kev , If your brother comes this way, I'm at 594 to 595 on the NIMTL on the western side and 595.5 to 596 on the easternside. I also see that Kiwi Rail has got some "wagon derailment" sensors on the track now too,as that track is pretty rough down there. :eyes: TSG.

Here you go Kev, my little 4 legged friend, he really likes having his ears rubbed and nose scratched....if he's in a bad mood, all I have to do is run faster than him!!

He's quite adorabull!!
