Hi,

Here's one for Brian.

Can you please advise me whether I need to change anything other than the control box and coil for a 6v - 12v conversion, can I get away with a 6v starter and dynamo??

Hi Barry,

You need to change control box, coil and dynamo for certain, starter will possibly work for a while. Why not get another Dexta instead of this Fergy stuff.

What do you have? A TO- 20? I've converted a bunch of 9N, 2N, 8N Fords for people who wanted them converted. And a few Fergies, I try to talk them out of it first though as there is nothing wrong with 6 Volt if everything is right. Often times slow cranking is caused by a dirty starter and mounting surfaces. Take it apart,clean everything well, and you will be supprised at how much better it will crank. Dandy Dave!

It came at a knock down price Brian, could not refuse, it's a handy little thing. Dave I will try what you have suggested as the problem is the slow cranking. It's a 1948 TEA.

I seem to recall that the 12 volt starter for these tractors is larger than the 6 volt and that the aperture in the back plate is too small for the 12 volt starter.

The little grey fella that I have used to start on the starting handle before it was submerged in the floods in Evesham some years ago. I haven't got around to running it since.

There is a difference in the starters and also the gearbox casting for the different starters. I forget the reasons and models but I do remember changing an engine in one of mine to find the bell housing a different shape around the starter and being unable to fit either starter so having to resort to a starting handle. Glad those days have gone

Think its the other way around, the 6V starter is bigger than the 12V. The starter on mine is the same as on a Triumph Herald.

On the subject of "Triumph Hearld", Brian do you want another??? It 's not far from here, and for the right $$$ I think they would sell it TSG.

Have you ever come across a Vittesse? Triumph Herald with a six cylinder fitted! Sporting version of the Herald. One thing that could be said for them all, you could get to the engine to service it.

Yes ,there are still a few Vittesse out there.I guess they would handle a bit like a 6 cylinder Marina? As a general rule,there is still a good selection of Triumphs TR, Stags, 2000/2500 and Hearlds out here.TSG.

Triumphs bring back memories! I had a girlfriend who ran a Triumph Spitfire!
