Gear box locked in first/second gear

Post by taffdavies »

Suddenly gearbox locked in forward gear cannot knock out of gear.can still drive in locked gear. Would this be a selector problem?

The main gear lever is probably the solution, it wears at the bottom and on the pin used to position it. It also wears the locating slot in the lever itself allowing the lever to move too far over as you change gear and it drops out of the retainer on the selector rail. take the lever off first, before the selector plate and, with a bit of welding and filing you can sort the problem.

If you have a Power Major, they were only made for a couple of years between July 1958 and November 1960. One of the shortest builds of any of the Fordson models.

Hi
Tractor is 1955 what model I have not a clue. Bonnet says power? The problem is the selector boot which fits on the end of selector shaft secured with a ""breather" screw. Have run a weld inside have to get a round file to clean up. Have tried to obtain a new piece, only used might be available also the gear stick is quite worn. Theses are available new.

Hi Gary,

You have a Fordson Major Mk 1. Not being pedantic about the model but there are subtle changes that make a difference to what parts you are looking for although the selector "boot" will be the same on all of them. You should be able to pick one up second hand quite easily at a breakers.

Hi Brian
Have tried a few breakers so far not interested in opening selector cover. I ran a weld inside the "boot" and my son fitted it this morning. All back to normal.
Thanks for the interest.

It has been a summer of problems. Main problem is the fact that I have approx 200yds to travel on highway then onto the beach. The VOSA people have been invovled plus police, booking people and issuing on spot fines (£100 per go) beacause no lighting boards on boat/trailer. Have spent summer wiring tractor for lights and fitting a electric box to run lights to trailer board. Must have doubled the value of the tractor with all the wiring loom which has been made up tp run ancillaries - lights, indicators, horn, all because a local could not have control over the boat park . This in addition to fitting a large alternator to run an electric winch. Still, hopefully next summer will be without problems
