JD and no doubt others want their cake and to eat it !
They have been hacking car controllers for donkeys years to improve performance although the likelihood of altering something which then contravenes an emission reg or similar is there with any software (even the OEM's version if you are VW!)
At least JD got their version which ships with the tractor largely fit for purpose, unlike Micro$oft and any of its operating systems.
One of my customers once told me that while we might consider that we had simply sold him a machine, he regarded it as buying production capacity - a distinction I'm not sure I ever managed to get our design, production and sales departments to fully understand
