Ford 655d engine options?

Post by Ford655d »

Hi guys, thanks for letting me join this group.
I own a Ford 655D turbo excavator, and it’s having engine trouble so requires either a strip down and rebuild, or an engine swap.
I’m steering towards fitting a vapormatic BSD444T replacement short motor, and may even sport a replacement vapormatic cylinder head, so it will be all new effectively.
Turbo and injection system will be serviced and repaired, and I’ll fit a new water pump and engine oil pump.
A neighbour mentioned fitting a ford/ new Holland 7740 powerstar engine into the digger as another option..
I wonder if anyone has done that on a 655d excavator? If so, is it a straight fit?
Many thanks for any advice!

Depends on you location, Timik near Winchester may be worth a call for rebuild options..

Thanks @Hair Bear I have had some prices off Timik. My best option financially with my current engine is to buy a short motor at circa £2500+vat and get the other bits refurbished and bolt them on. So around the £3250- £3500 mark I’ll have an engine as good as new.!
I was mainly interested to know if a powerstar 7740 engine had been fitted to a 655d digger before as might be quite an upgrade maybe.. 🤔

A family member (mechanic) who specialises in Ford/NH is ‘pretty sure’ the 7740 engine would fit.

I know of one in Co Waterford, Ireland with a powerstar engine, but I haven't seen it in person. Have you decided what to do yet?
