hello this was a old topic what i have changed, can anyone tell me if this is a normal super major or an new performance ?
and what cronwheel pinion i have ( because i think its a normal super major, and it should have the fast pinion crownwheel ) but its running( only ) 23kilometers ( 14 - 15 miles ) a hour, at 23000 revs ,and i think this i a little slow, because my other fordson power major runs a lot faster ( same tyre size ), so a im a little bit confused , maybe because someone told me that the normal super major are running faster than a new performance ( not that the road speed is a big problem , i just wondering wich fordson major has the fast crown wheel / pinion

Janus,
The date of the casting codes is 14 and 22 December 1961. So it will be a normal super major with orange wheel rims. But you do not have the original rear rims.
Know nothing about the crown wheel, but some other will. But looking at the numbers on the crown wheel is reads 9-12-61. So it looks the right one.
Do you have the cast iron sump?

@ Henk,
The rear wheels look pretty original to me, if they are 14x30 (tyre 16.9x30)? But I could be wrong of course.
@Janus,
My '61 SuperMajor runs about 30 kpm at 2,200 rpm.
New Performance tractors are slower on the road: they have the 4.4 ratio on crown/pignon. The older ones (like mine) have 3.3.
I don't know any further info about this.

the tire size is 18.4 x 30
where can i see what the ratio of this pinion crownwheel is 4.4 or 3.3 ? anybody can tell me ?
and henk thanks for the front engine plate , its mounted on this fordson
i have changed the sump for an iron cast sump
over a few weeks, i hope to start her up, and hope it won't leak, and its running fine, so i can paint the rest this summer

I believe the factory gear ratio is stamped in the surface that the lid sits on, on the front left corner.
What did you get for a sump, is it two cast iron pans cut and welded back together?

i know what you mean, but there is nothing stamped in this location
on a other location on the rear end flange, is stamped SR anybody know what it means, or seen this before ?
the sump is not welded, i'm a lucky man and found a original one ,on a spare fordson, that was standing for about 15 years outside

today i've changed my differentail for a 3.5 one i hope it runs a lot faster
and also a few photo's of the project

engine is running again, removed rear end to change diff

the left 4.4 the richt 3.3 as you can see the crownwheel is smaller of a 3.3 diff, and the pignon is bigger

cleaned the back end ( about a inch of dirty ( grease ) stuff )
here a few pictures of the fordson

diff is in rear end

before engine removal

engine removed

cleaned engine for paint and replaced sump

engine is paint

bearing before

bearing after

new bushes and spindels

Hi Janus,
Great pictures!
So the left crown wheel is the slow one?
Looks like the one in my tractor. I thought I had the quick one?
Did you manage to count the teeth on the crown and pignon wheel?
Do you have pictures of the pignonwheel as well?
Thank you in advance!

here is picture of the pignions
the slow one has 8 teeth on the pignion 35/8 = 4,375 = ( 4,4 ratio)
the fast one has 10 teeth on the pignion 35/10= 3.5 = ( 3,5 ratio)
( both the diff's got 35 teeth on the crownwheel )

here a few pictures, of the fordson ( my holiday is over but the fordson is bleu

)
i also had a question about the Letters SR , wich are standing on the flange of the rear end
i've found a side, of the older type fordson e27
http://www.fordsonmajor.se/fordson_eng/ ... /gears.htm
if you look at this side, i think the letters SR standing for the words Special Ratio, i dont 'know this for sure
but if someone is knowing what this realy means, i really like to hear this

by 1962 model
There are also different diamaeter bull gears too according to the parts books.
17.65 inches reduced to 17.52 inches.
Seems like they needed a larger diameter pinion shafts to be able to hollow them out for the diff lock activating pin and to do this they reduced the corresponding bull gear diameter which also offset the reduction to 4.4 ratio a little.
I wonder if Ford were also using up old tooling and stocks of E27N crownwheel and pinions before the model was due to run out?
These smaller bull gears are probably not be interchangable due to the change to the pinion shafts to allow for the diff lock.
I will be going through all this myself when I rebuild the final drive of my early Super Major, I am just hoping that the bull gears, or pinions are not damaged by the severely worn wheel bearings. ( probably no rollers )
I am also hoping that the axles had not changed as I have some 1960 ones ready to use?
