Strange oil leak?

Post by Andyraines »

Hi, been lurking on the forum a while now and picked up loads of good advice too so thanks!

I've been busy restoring a 1961 super major and after re assembling the parts and giving it a couple of decent road runs it's sprung a leak from the gearbox i think. Basically there are 2 bolts that hold the front mounting bracket for the diesel tank, one of these bolts has oil leaking from it- I assume that it's gearbox oil (it doesn't look or smel like engine oil).

oes anyone have any ideas or suggestions as to what is happening or how I can cure this? It might be worth mentioning that the bolt that is leaking is a breather type affair although the leak is coming from the threads not the actual breather. I've checked the obvious things lke gearbox over flled but this is all fine

Any help greatly appreciated and I'll put up some pictures over the next couple of days

Thanks

Andy

Hi, i dont suppose its something like the steering box leaking? Or a blocked breather? How much oil is leaking?

I am not quite sure, but one of the bolts for either the steering box or the fixture for the diesel tank is a ventilation bolt for the gear box.
Unscrew the bolt and you will see it has a small hole

Hi- Yes it's coming from the bolt that holds the bracket for the diesel tank. As you say this bolt does have a small hole in it for ventilation and is clear- i checked with an airline! The oil is leaking from the same place although through the threads rather than through the breather hole- all very strange!

Try to use some thread-gasket.

I also notice quite a lot of oil spill on my tractor
