Road Legal Dexta. Taxation etc
Hey Gents. I've looked throught the pages but do not seem to be able to find the information i'm looking for.
My tractor reg VZ 5887 (Tyrone) has no tax book. i've spoken to the owners family who bought it, and the man who owned it until 1975 before us and they have no memory of a 'log book'.
I've spoken to the DVA in Coleraine Northern Ireland who have requested a VC34(NI) with £25. They have said they will have to do a historic manual search.
This is fair enough. I hope out tractor reg is correct, it should be, it ws painted on.
Two questions......
Can i legally drive a tractor without road tax and a tax book?
Can i insure a tractor without a tax book (VC5).
What are your thoughts/experiences? I hope to update this topic as a source of information. Thanks

Re: Road Legal Dexta. Taxation etc
You cannot legally drive your tractor on the road without third party insurance and a valid tax disc. insurance is very cheap and tax disc is free.If the d.v.l.a. do not still have your reg. number on their computer, they will allocate an other age related number. You may have to show them an insurance cover note before they issue a tax disc.Of course you can drive off road without either.

Sorry, I forgot to say that you can insure the tractor on the tractor serial number, found on the join between the engine and gearbox.

There is bound to be a vintage tractor club somewhere in your area, if you have any problem, they would help you

Thanks for the information Brian. Much appreciated!
Re: Road Legal Dexta. Taxation etc
If you know the reg as you say you do, then you should be able to go to the issuing council (Tyrone?) and ask for a photocopy of your tractor's entry in their records (costs £6.50). That will give you the reg date and first owner. With this evidence you should be able to claim your reg from the DVLA, (assuming it's not been reissued to another vehicle).

Ben in Northern Ireland I think all records are held by the DVA, and not local councils. (Councils have changed since the 60's, amalgamation, public review etc)
Re: Road Legal Dexta. Taxation etc
Quite so, but if NI was like the mainland UK, in 1959 reg nos were issued by local councils, and those records still exist. A photocopy of the relevant entry can then be used by you to support your claim to that reg.Wee59dexta wrote:Ben in Northern Ireland I think all records are held by the DVA, and not local councils. This website http://www.kingkong.demon.co.uk/where/gb.htm does indeed indicate that VZ is a Tyrone reg, so you can ask them or their successors to photocopy the original entry for your reg.

Thanks Ben.
I know the number plate is correct for my tractors era:
Tyrone County Council (Omagh LVLO/VRO from 1 January 1974): (in original issuing sequence) JI HZ VZ
JI 1 to JI 9999 (Dec 1903 – Feb 1944);
HZ 1 to HZ 9999 (Feb 1944 – Apr 1956);
VZ 1 to VZ 9999 (Apr 1956 – Apr 1961) My Reg is VZ 5887 - 1959.
