grinding noise from starter

Post by sky blue »

Hi all, have started to get a grinding noise when i press down the leaver to start
the dexta, ihad the starter compleatly rebuilt about 6 years ago and had no starting
problems since untill these strange grinding now when i depress the leaver,
the engine starts ok even with the grinding , could this be another rebuild of starter or
could it be a new ring gear needed, surely the starter wold last more than 6 years
anyone any ideas. sky blue

Its simple enough to just remove the starter and have a look at the nose bushing for wear. Also have a look at the ring gear while your at it. My guess is a damaged starter gear or bushing.....

just had the starter up on the bench and spun it over with battery and jump leads
the grinding is comming from the starer as ol blue said , is it worth while trying to repair or
would changing to a later model starter be a better way to goas the tractor is a worker not a show piece.
would anyone know which starter motor fits on i know ill have to put a key switch and rewire , ill probley
need adigram for this also , :) sky blue

Get your starter rebuilt, typically costs around £100 over here.

hi Bensdexta , already done that cost 120 euros about 6yrs ago the same i suppose,
all the electric parts were renewed the firm has sadly due to the world rec folded, the
problem now is the metal parts bushings bearings ect are wore out, im thinking now would be better to get a
compleat new starter for a 135 or 4000 and rewire to suit, these are easily got and better way to go
and probley cheaper than the dexta starter new form turkey

the nose bushing seems to be worn as the shaft has plenty of movement at this point and the bush
does look as if has seen better days, are these easily replaced and where can these be got,
i would give this ago
as i have nothing to loose if i have to change the starter anyway,

This guy rebuilt my starter:
'8617petert' on ebay.
Peter can supply all the parts, and is very helpful.

just like to leave an update on starter grinding may help someone ,
i eventually tracked down a guy not to far away postage was always going to to be a problem
with starter , anyway , he took the starter striped and tested it , it turns out the teeth on
starter had been renewed a last rebuild and had been worn inagainst flywheel gear
, this had left them after time sharp edged
and not slipping in to flywheel teeth properly and causing the grinding , the mech grinded the teeth to a bevel edge
he also replaced the nose cone bush , got it back in and its working great, grinding gone :)
he did say if it happened again the fly wheel gear would probley need looking at,
