Fordson Industrial Engine serial Numbers

Post by Jimcdbts »

The Fordson tractor engine was available as an industrial engine from the outset of tractor production ,however in 1957 with the introduction of the mk2 engine and also the introduction of the Thames Trader a new range of Industrial engines was introduced the 589E ,590E ,591E and 592E 4 and 6 cylinder petrol and diesel engines. These were produced on a dedicated engine line and were introduced in 1957 and made until July 1967for 6 cyl and April 1970 for 4 cyl . They all have serial no beginning with S and some can be found fitted to Fordson majors as replacements. Thames trader engines can also sometimes be found in the tractors and these also have separate serial nos with a different prefix 530E for the 4 cylinder diesel. I have copied the serial nos into tables a will post here, it is an incomplete listing as i am missing the data for early and late Thames trader engines and some early nos for the industrials In March 1965 the engine line at Dagenham started to produce the new 2700 range derived from the earlier range. These were produced as both industrial and truck engines for the new D series. The two engine ranges going down the line until July 1967 for 6 cyl and April 1970 for 4 cyl ,when the old range was discontinued. In March 1964 the engine castings for all tractor ,truck and industrial engines ceased to be sourced from the Dagenham foundry and were instead supplied by Sterling Metals Ltd of Nuneaton. All engine castings for the old range of engines up until April 1970 came from this source. The serial numbers should be usefull to those trying to identify and date tractors with these engines fitted instead of the proper tractor engine. Prior to The introduction of the 598-592 range engine the industrial engines had other designations ie 954E 4 cyl Diesel, 955E 4 cyl petrol ,956E Vap oil, 562E 4 cyl Diesel, and 563E 4 cyl petrol all versions of the tractor engine.I don`t have any serial no details of these engines. After April 1970 the old range of 4 cyl 592E engine was manufactured for Ford by Ebro in Spain and was supplied with a proper S industrial ford serial no until 1974 after which it became a purely Ebro engine with no Ford logo or serial no.

Ford Industrial Engine Serial Numbers (FORDSON TYPE)
589E 6 cyl petrol, 590E 6 cyl Diesel, 591E 4 cyl Petrol, 592E 4 cyl Diesel, see the later list for serial nos after 1967 as 592E still available with Industrial S serial number up until 1974.

I will need to try and edit it a bit as it was in the form of a table but when i posted it the borders didn`t cross over and the list is a wee bit jumbled. up .Have had this info for over 25 years as i used work for a local engineering company where we used loads of Ford engines from our local power products dealer to install in all types of industrial plant and equipment .During My time it was mostly 2720 and BSD series engines but i do have all the books still and all the design installation books for the engines. Ford Power Products were great as you could build an installation and order up any parts within ford parts division as an OEM customer. We used parts from tractors, D series and cargo trucks , R series buses and even transits we even used axles from the FW60,s all ordered through the Ford Power Products division.

Yes, a more organized information would be better to read. I am interested in all kind of information about the 590E engine and it´s history in Dagenham at that time.

In 1990 we took delivery of the last 2726T engines we could get as dagenham stopped production of 2700 range diesels for trucks and industry. Over the years we had all different models all now only as diesels. 2701E ,2701C,2711E ,2712E ,2722 , 2706E all 4 cyl, 2703E,2703C,2704C, 2704E, 2704ET,2708E,2709E ,2713E,2714E,2715E ,2723,2725,2726T, 2726TG,2726TM and 2728T all 6 cyl. Most likely all these variations may be found in the Fordson major as a conversion either as 4 or 6 cylinders.and be used in all types of Ford based tractors .A turbocharged version of the 590E was also avialable.

At my workplace, we have a sprinkler fire pump powered by a Ford 2725 that has an automatic start in a situation of both fire and blackout. It has less than 100h on the hourmeter.

Grani, Tell them it is old, obsolete, and hard to get parts for. Tell them it is time to up grade and you will be glad to haul the old unit away. Dandy Dave!

I wonder about something - the list describe the 510 as a
Thames trader engine , I have a 510 engine from a combine
which I then will believe is a industrial engine .

Thanks for all that facinating information,
Here is a bit more information for you: I have a Thames Trader engine here which cost me $50 and a 800km return trip, it carries a cast date 5 A 8 ( Jan 1965 )
This was a transition engine just before they changed to the full K series engine, it has the K series sump but still has the earlier cam, waterpump and late Super Major type injection pump arrangement.
I have struggled to find any information about the engine prefix which is 660EE 13235, as this is a transition model engine carried over into the K series truck it may be helpful fill some gaps in your records, perhaps they only made these for a couple of months, I know 1966 has the upgraded engine.
From industrail parts books of the 1965 era it appears to still be a wet liner engine in a K series, but I don't want to strip it as I want to try to use it as is in a E 27 N 6cyl tractor conversion using a E 1 A gearbox, though some work will be required as it was laying on the ground since about 1980, I have patched up an injection pump for it, and it still turns over fine.

Hi Jimcdbts
I had look at your ID tables but coudnt ID mine its up and running now but still its good to have info.
I entered a post in august under Parts swap forum,Topics Ford 4D engine with all the info I could glean from engine casting numbers ETC just wondering if you could pin it down,It was part of a welding plant.

Just reviving this to add a few missing details.
Lorry numbers are of three distinct types:
ET6 type, with the ET6 having the Ford V8 and the ET7 having the P6 coming beforehand, introduced March 54, Mk2 from 500E-46803
500E- 4 cyl petrol - up to Mk2 100 mm bore, Mk2 onwards 95 mm bore
502E- 4 cyl diesel - max revs 2500 rpm
Thames Traders, introduced April 57, Mk2 from approx 4 cylB-31000, 6 cylB-100000
528E- 4 cyl petrol
530E- 4 cyl diesel - max revs 2500 rpm
508E- 6 cyl petrol
510E- 6 cyl diesel - max revs 2500 rpm
and normal control Traders, introduced May 62, replaced the 500E/502E using the Ford Köln cab
622E- 4 cyl petrol
624E- 4 cyl diesel - max revs 2500 rpm
658E- 6 cyl petrol
660E- 6 cyl diesel - max revs 2500 rpm
Beware with NC Traders, as they evolved into the Ford K series powered by 2700E engines, I think the petrol one remained Major powered until it was dropped in 67.
Different fuel engines were in the same series, 4 and 6 cylinders running independently. Each type of vehicle has it's own series.
From November 61 these numbers were modified by adding a second letter denoting year as with tractors. Vehicle numbers became even more similar to tractor numbers, the code before the year letter indicating the payload capacity and a number series that changed every year. I think 4 and 6 cylinders ran independently but don't know for sure. model codes are more varied, these are the ones Ford chose thinking they would be the commonest (as happened with Major's having most common parts with E1ADKN part numbers until the Power Major when E1ADDN took over).

Industrial numbers:
S prefix for 589E, 590E, 591E and 592E from April 57 onwards (Mk2 type).
589E- 6 cyl petrol
590E- 6 cyl diesel - max revs 2250 rpm
591E- 4 cyl petrol
592E- 4 cyl diesel - max revs 2250 rpm
All were in the same series, from March 65 the 2700E engines were also made in the same series, April 70-74 made by Ebro but still with Ford markings and numbers. Parts in these engines were predominately lorry based but not always.
R prefix for 953E, 954E, 955E, 955E, 562E and 563E to April 57 (Mk1 type). Not too sure about this but this is what seems to have cropped up. If anyone can confirm this it will open up the Mk1 industrial history.
Tractor based
953E- 4 cyl petrol zero octane
954E- 4 cyl diesel - max revs 1600 rpm
955E- 4 cyl petrol - 95 mm bore
956E- 4 cyl TVO
Lorry based
562E- 4 cyl diesel - max revs 2500 rpm
563E- 4 cyl petrol - 100 mm bore
Put these in inverse order as I'm not yet very clear on Mk1 details. AS far as I know they were all in the same series

Any number that doesn't conform to tractor or the above types might well be an Ebro number, confirmed if the engine is made after 1958 and has a number under injector no.4 that doesn't conform to Ford ones either, Ebro made engines until 1980. Mk1 numbers are not yet very clear.
This is still incomplete, there's still a lot of missing information. I suspect fairly few Major engines were sold after the 2700E engines appeared so we'll never probably know the total production, Ebro is still not very well documented either.

Thanks for that,
Actually, I can add a bit more too, Petrol Power Major engines did appear after the official tractor cut off point for those engines, in industrial machines.
Our late petrol Power Major engine was fitted to a Cranville crane in eastern side of Australia through Power Major skid units being supplied later than tractor production. Our 4cyl engines for some reason on this side of Australia carried reduced engine prefixes than published.

Our Power Major tractors on this side of the country were assembled in Perth Western Australia 4000kms away from where our Cranville crane was constructed. My son and I have several Power Majors Tractors we plan to get going and are about to collect another one in the next few weeks.

Sounds like your quite busy. As far as I know petrol tractors were available until the very end, but they were rare. The only engine that was discontinued early on was the TVO in March 57 (both tractors and industrials). Not sure I understand what you mean with reduced prefixes, the only cases I'm aware of are a few November 61 tractors that had a Z instead of the 08A. Good luck with your latest find!

Our tractors on this side at least do not have the 08 in front of the engine number and just start with a C then the number, perhaps the individual assembly of export tractors were meant to put the 08 in front to signify assembled in Australia, however as our tractors did not usually leave the country they may have thought that that step of adding the 08 at the front was unnecessary. No one here in Australia has yet explained the reason to me.posting.php?mode=reply&f=2&t=5626&sid=7 ... c04ff4851f#

One of our tractors actually has the C stamped backwards.
This added prefix reminds me a bit of my HZ Statesman Holden car which on assembly had engines taken from a rack of engines and only when fitted to a Statesman they added an 11 at the front of the pre-existing engine number to signify it was a Statesman only engine, in reality there was little difference if anything. Mike.

Very strange, wonder if Dexta's are the same as otherwise there's no way to distinguish between the two after November 61. The 08 was for Dagenham to use a computer on spares and stuff of that sort. The reversed C is probably just a mistake from loading up the stamper one day (I'm sure there will be more similar events). All Major's and Dexta's were in a world wide series (as listed many times in manuals and so on) except anything made by Ebro (but not necessarily sold by them).

Yes the numbers seem to be strange alright, engine numbers published by my Australian tractor club make no sense to me at all.

My 1958 Dexta is 1419755 and my local club just states 144 for 1958, that is more like the engine size, those numbers are round about ( but not exactly consistent with the Major numbers for 1958, then there is the issue of the engine cast dates, it seems Perkins followed a different format for dates, that engine is cast J228 July 22nd 1958, where if Ford cast them they would have put J 22 B to conform to their block cast dates.

My red wheel Super Dexta project tractor is 1613726 cast P 6 2, Ford would have put P 6 H if it was a Major, also the engine number does not conform to published material which would have had it being 09B7*******
The published material has it that the Dexta numbers changed to the new system in November 1961 09A ***** and ran through to 1964 being 09D******
Here is proof in a 1962 engine that this did not occur for some reason that I cannot explain!
Maybe this needs to be under a Dexta topic, feel free to copy it across.

I don't have a white ( grey wheel ) NP Super Dexta for a comparison, Mike.

Dexta's had separate engine numbers, running from 1400000 to 1553322 and Super Dexta's from 1600000 to 1664496, this is different from the serial number which was 957E prefixed until November 61 (Petrol models were 959E) and was stamped on the bell housing flange next to the timing inspection cover.
Dexta's and Major's never ran in the same series.
As for casting codes only the engine ones are odd, the rest are like Major's, the engine codes are in a separate Dexta thread, and they're on the block and head as far as I know (the head one is under the rocker cover, visible through the oil filler).
