engine head job
I have been working a bit on the Selene lately.
Since there were some frost related cracks in the cilinder head, it was time to get it fixed properly. I used some epoxy metal in the past, but no luck on that.
2 cracks above the manifolds
and one that goes around the bottom of front side
The head itself looks alright. We got the cracks welded and it is now to the shop to get it pressure tested, skimmed and the valves done.
The valve guides where in good shape, so they will be reused. Same for the valves. They are cleaned with the wire brush and smooth sanding paper
The engine is still in the tractor and could use some cleaning too
All cleaned up, I will juste leave the top of the liners.
Now just waiting to get the head back

Re: engine head job
Looking good. Quite an interesting casting code on the head. It's always nice to fix things like that, rather than replace them.

Re: engine head job
Apologies if you have already done it, but if you spin the valves in a pillar drill it will show if any of them are slightly bent. Last head I did had 2 valves slightly out of true
My biggest fear is that when i die my wife will sell my tractors for what i told her they cost

Re: engine head job
small update: no luck with the head, still leaking according to the machine shop.
Will need to find a period correct FL head.

Re: engine head job
Make sure it's part no. E1ADDN-6052J, as otherwise you'll have a bit less power. A few of the previous head (E1ADDN-6052H) were also marked FL.

Re: engine head job
This is the replacement head
it could use a little bit of cleaning
In progress of the cleaning:
I hope it is a good one, and I should have it back somewhere next week.

It certainly looks good, and from the right period too! Hopefully you'll be running again in no time.

Re: engine head job
Again I'm probably stating the obvious to you but make sure you use the correct valve springs for the camshaft you have in the engine

Looking very good. This one's ports are a bit cleaner than Super Billy's ones!

Re: engine head job
Finished the job today.
There is some oil coming out of the exhaust ports. I guess not much to do about this, unless fitting new liners and pistons.

What do you all think?

Re: engine head job
I think the oil will be from the overhaul, I wouldn't worry about it as it already seemed to clear in the video. I was surprised at how long it took to start, but maybe the injectors weren't fully bled. Everything looks good, I wouldn't have even tried to turn it over without the air filter, nor would I have fitted that thermostat but that's just me. Love seeing such good internal paint! Once running it's sounding pretty good, and it's nice to see the oil where it should be. I would see if you can realign the fan pulley, as it's quite badly off centre.

Re: engine head job
That’s quite a wobble on the fan pulley. Is it seated properly on the water pump?
