Paint Type

Post by hiking bear »

Does anyone have any experience or recommendations for a decent paint. In the past ive used synthetic enamel made by a company called Corrofast. Done my 35 7 years ago and still looks good. Been to local factor and they no longer stock this make. I know agriline does a paint which i presume is a synthetic. I dont wish to get involved with 2 pack or water based.

I would like to add a question:

Is the agriline Ford tractor blue and Ford grey white the correct colour for the late Super dextas? It does not have to be 100% the same, but I like the newer blue more than the empire blue.

Im very impressed with sparex paint, also farmline paint is good. its more like the old type paint with a slightly slower drying time

New Holland Q-Coat

Post by Bensdexta »

I've been using New Holland Q-Coat one pot paints, after Stefan's extensive research on colour matching. They're easy to use and dry in a few hours at temps above about 15C, althought they seem to take a week or two to go completely hard, longer at this time of the year.

If it's hot >20C, I add a dash of Owatrol Oil (after Stefan) which keep the wet edge longer and help the brush marks flow out.
All the best,

@Bensdexta: You brush painted? Does that work Ok for the casting parts? Would make life a bit easier for me. How much thinner/liter paint?

Nils,
All my castings etc have been bead blasted to remove old paint, then grit blasted if there is any corrosion. Then phosphate primer, then Q-Coat NH grey primer & finally Q-Coat NH Empire blue (correct colour for my '61). I have applied the Q-Coat to some of the castings by brush, but the main ones engine, gearbox etc have been sprayed.

There is no problem applying Q-Coat by brush to castings. When brushing, I usually add a dash of thinners say 5% by vol, and say 5% Owatrol but only if the air temp is high above ~20C. But the precise amounts aren't critical - whatever works!

On some parts for extra corrosion protection, I added another primer, Bilt Hamber Electrox - a high zinc primer, applied over the phosphate. This is brushed on and gives a hard finish; then the Q-Coat etc.

Small parts like bonnet latches, throttle rods, nuts&bolts, etc I am having blasted and zinc plated, as I found a cheap plating shop. Hopefully now she'll last another 50years

Grills could be blue straight from the factory or silver. If they were from Ford as replacement parts they wetre silver.
