Rear Axle seals

Post by AdrianNPMajor »

I recently replaced the rear axle seals on my NP Super Major. Unfortunately I did not squeeze the tinwork casing up against the trumpet housing tightly enough with the result that the flat cork seal at the end of the housing is not doing its job and I have a small leak. I am going to redo the job. Can anyone advise on how to press the tinwork casing up tightly against the end of the trumpet housing and crimping it into the groove effectively? I'd be grateful for any help.

I have now redone the job. In the end I used some stubby wooden wedges fashioned out of some oak blocks. They squeezed the tinwork up really tightly. For good measure I added some Wynns black instant gasket, which oozed satisfyingly out of the joint. I am hoping the job is now a good one!
