Have started my Dexta today after some days again - very cold in our area
Afeter cranking and cranking she fired and had rum for about 15 minutes as usual. The she started to sound very loud, metal noise and a bit of smoke came out of the small pipe going from valve cover and ending behind the starter-engine...
Have switched it of and started after 20 minutes again. 5 min of good running and again the bad metal noise coming out of the engine...
What could it be. Piston rings or something else to think about?
Coolant is inside. But if it's in the right concentraion, actually don't know. But - if she was runnning fie for 15 min, so the engine got warm so even if there is a bit of blocked pipe by freezed water, it should melt, right?
That was also my idea. An old piston or piston ring.
So, what would you suggest to do next, how can I find the problem?
If the radiator is frozen it doesn't melt spesially because the fan will keep the radiator cold and therefor the coolant wont begin sirkulate, and then the coolant in the engine can boil and create high pressure and blow head gasket with the radiator still frozen
Been there, did that

could it be a sticky push rod causing one of the valves to come in to contact with the piston?
I guess you could check thatby removing the rocker cover and rocker shaft.
Hi guys...
Thanks. Yes, it will be either something with a valve or with the piston /pistonring... Think she need to park now till summer and then I will see whats going on inside...
Had the plan for a full restoration in 2013/14, but as I see now, I think I have to start with a "small" enginge overhaul...
S***, need her help in the next weeks...
But - what I#m wondering about is, that she's running quite smooth as long as the engine is cold. The bad noise is coming after she gets warmer. Why?
If as you say "aloud noise" from the engine, i would be more worried about it been a Big End gone, i sure would not run that engine reguardless of how much i needed to. A rod through the side would be likley, and even more damage to the crank. Jim.
No, it was not so loud. I know the noise of a broken rod or damaged crankshaft bearings...
But there is no other way. Have start to open it at both sides...
One question: didn't took a look at the sump so far. How to remove it. Is it as usual in cars, just some screws from the bottom or do I need to remove the half engine to get it loose?
Best to remove the whole axle/radiator assembly to get to the sump. On these tractors the sump and block form part of the load bearing structure, unlike a car or truck.
Could be a failed oil pump or intake tube. They did crack or break at times, this is why the noise comes as she warms, its things seizing up through lack of oil.

As he goes on to say the water was not frozen, But if it had been, would that have been enough to have cracked the weak Dexta block. ??
yes the block might crack of the frozen water. The head too. But that demands almost pure water and many minus degrees. if you have some antifreese in it it would be like slush and that doesn't crack the block, just prevent the coolant to sirkulate.
All depends on how cold and consentration of antifreeze.
