Welcome Mark,

Have you any Aussie contacts? I saw dozens of raised PTO units on scrap tractors over there last April.

Bendigo!!! My favourite town!!! Home nearby of the Fordson Tractor Club of Australia.

The items pictured were on a farm near Robinvale on the NSW boarder. I wish I could have shipped the parts lying around, back to England. :D

Hi Brian,
it appears you have picture of super major (disc brakes). by chance do you know whether the pto will draw out the back after unbolting raised unit or do i have to open up back end? ie. how big of a mission is it to remover raised unit (everything needed to convert mine) from doner? i better find out before asking mate to go looking. lol. would it be possible to aquire unit from your picture tractor? cheers mark

E27N Major...$6000,E27N Major 1/2 track...$12000,The look on the parts guys face when you enquire about the availability of a Major Raised PTO.....priceless!!!. :eyes:
Mark , I've looked around Hamilton and ended up at Ruakura Motors, and they said only a "few" raised Pto's came to NZ and also said that they are "unobtainable" either as parts or complete.Basically as rare as rocking horse manure.Best bet would be to find someone in Victoria or NSW to locate one and get it shipped to NZ. :yikes: Or fly to Australia and bring it back as hand luggage..TSG.

Raised PTO easy to remove BUT, there will be a lot of oil lost unless you drain backend first (or drop nose of tractor into a big ditch to run oil up front of back end). Also when you unbolt the 4 retaining bolts be sure not to remove the top right (as viewed from behind tractor) bolt, this acts as a detent for spring and ball of selector lever, removing bolt completely will result in both ball and spring dropping out. I always wind a nut onto the back of this "special" bolt once unit removed to keep it in place. Whole unit complete with shaft can be removed from backend, no need to delve into the transmission etc. Don't forget you need to take the shaft as well as the actual drop box off the back. Finally, new performance super major units are a different ratio (1:1) as opposed to the rest of the major range. This explains why all majors except new performance have 2 markers on the tacho, one for normal PTO the other for Raised PTO.
Hope this helps, these units are rare in the UK but I know a lot can be found in the US and also Australia it would seem. In this country they were often found on county crawlers since the correct county drawbar blocks the use of a standard fordson PTO, the raised PTO puts the output shaft up at an accessible height.
Regards
Ed

Hi Ed, many thanks for sharing knowledge, makes my job easier when i ask friend overseas to get pto when all comes out the back. not such a large operation if/when he finds a wreak. BTW, why did they not use 1:1 ratio units on power/diesel/super majors? mark.

They changed the ratio to get a higher rev on the engine to obtain a Standard PTO speed of 540 , thereby producing a higher PTO horse power. Dandy Dave!

Hi Dandy dave,
from your answer i take it it doesnt matter whether i get a raised unit ex major/power or either of super majors, just if i get a New performance unit then pto engine revs will be higher at pto 540rpm.
makes it even easier to source something. cheers

Be careful now. I believe I remember the fellows saying there is a difference in the shaft that drives the raized PTO between the Major and Super Series.

Looking futher, From the parts list it looks like the earlier PTO's had a 1:1.33 output. In 63 and 64 the they do not list the PTO ratio. Mark above said it is one to one. The shaft that drives these units seems to be the same part number from 1952 to 1964. The raized PTO unit is what under went changes. As long as you get eveything in working order the first time, it looks like it will interchange throughout production. Dandy Dave!

Watch out for different number of teeth on hydraulic pump drive gear, you may need to swap over your original gear.
Now one question I haven't found the answer to is if you have a NP shaft these are bigger diameter (2 1/8" I think from memory) and I don't know how this affects the interchangability of pump gear or where it inserts into the PTO selector at the gearbox end.

hi dandy dave and roadless63
many thanks for comments, i seem to have overlooked shaft differences in my comments, it would appear i do need to find other than new performance major units if i want to fit it without major dissassembly.
this site is a great help, thanks to all involved. Mark

I've just noticed, the picture in Brians post above is actually a new performance super major, so it is fair to say the raised PTO is thus a new performance unit, the rarest of the rare!!
