The end with the big spring and 'bulb' goes into the block.....

They originally came with 160 degree thermostats (at least mine had one in the 70's when I got it).....these don't seem to be available anymore.....170 to 180 degree should be fine...what you don't want is the coolant boiling in the radiator/ water jacket....make sure you have a good, working pressure cap on the radiator. I'm told some came with a plain cap originally.

The temp gauges make it confusing...they show 'normal' as 160 to 170...makes sense if you have a 160 thermostat.

thanks for that commander, one other thing , i have a rep/ gauge in my dexta it reads 90 yellow 150 green ,175 to 230 degrees this is
into the red on gauge ,when i am working her hard it will climb into red , the reading goes up to 230 in the
red although i never get up near this.it will at times go about a third of the way in to red, would this be normal or is it overheating when in red :scratchhead: .
