Depending on which pump is supplied by the aftermarket suppliers you may also need to replace the auxiliary drive shaft and bearings. It may be best to keep your original pump and setup, even after 60 years the pumps can still be better than the new ones.

Try testing your pump as per the instructions from the manual:

Oil Pump Test.
The oil pump may be tested when removed from the engine by carrying out the following check. Install the suction pipe and immerse the lower end in a mixture of three parts kerosene to one part S.A,E. 30 engine oil and rotate the pump by hand in a clockwise direction when at approximately 60 RPM a copious supply of fluid from the outlet should be evident.

I have used this method for many years and found it to work although I must admit we used straight kerosene rather than a mixture. When I overhauled Henrietta's engine I used the original pump and relief valve plus Morris 20/50W oil. I now have around 40 psi oil pressure dropping to 30 psi after sustained working when hot. Henrietta is 63 years old and still working.

You can also dismantle and clean the PR Valve.

As far as the gasket is concerned there is one for engines with a "horseshoe" camshaft thrust washer and one for engines with a single bolt fixing cam shaft. My memory cannot tell me which is which and only part numbers are shown in the book.

If you go ahead with the later oil pump you will have to retain the original pick up pipe as you will not have a drilled centre Main bearing cap to take the support bracket.

thanks for your reply brian,i have had I good measure up of the 2 oil pumps and cant find anything difference I also fitted in the block and drove via the injector drive shaft with the pick up fitted I had good flow to filter port gear appeared to mesh well.also today I went looking for good engine oil I came back with morris 20/50 classic which sound like what you would use so that's a lucky guess. also I revisited the timming plate in the light of day and found light shading which looks to me that it has had the type with the small oil path to cam thrust
