hi all since my grandad is ill in hospital i need some advice. im ploughing using my dexta and a ferguson 2 furrow plough which has a off set frame work. the question is about front wheel tracking. should the front wheels be set in on the narrowest setting with 400-19 wheels or should they be set further out?.
thanks for any help

James,
Two ways of doing this:

1. Line up the inside of the front wheels with the inside of the rear wheels.

2. Line up the centre of the front wheels with the centre of the rear wheels.

I use method 2 as, in Norfolk we have a lot of flints and if the front tyre runs along the furrow wall it gets cut.

Rear wheel setting is important to allow the plough to run in the correct place easily although you do have sideways adjustment on the plough cross shaft.

If you measure the plough point to point width between the bodies, you should have the same distance between the front point and the tyre, give or take 1/2" when the plough is on the ground.

Kind regards
Brian

thanks brian, one other question how should the plough sit on the back of the tractor should it be level on both plains? since my grandad usually sets it up.

Level in both planes when the tractor is in the furrow. To check the level when going forwards, stop with the brakes and apply the hand brake. It may sound strange when you have the plough in the ground but if you stop normally the tractor eases back slightly and the plough will rise slightly at the front. So it will not be as it is in work.

Also check the open furrow. The bottom should be at right angles to the furrow wall and you should be able to see a clear mark from the heel iron where the furrow floor meets the furrow wall.

Kind regards
Brian

James,

I would suspect 56" but it is not really too important as long as your distance for our front furrow is the same as between your first and second furrows.

I have all my tractors set at 60" because this is the setting for planting and working the spuds. I plough with a TS82 set at 14" furrows and a Ransomes digger and a PM both set at 12" furrows.
