Hello, I have a 1950's Fordson Major Deisel. When I bought it from an elderly man he told me never to let the injector pump run out of oil. There is a cap on top of the Simms pump with a small nut holding it on and under the cap there is some metal screening it almost looks like a breather cap. Is this where I put the oil and if so what kind and how much? I need a response soon as I do not want to run my tractor without knowing Thank you! Doug.

Douglas,

The Simms Pneumatic Governed pump on the Fordson Major Diesel only requires oil refilling if the pump has been dismantled and is being reset on a pump test rig.

All the rest of its life it is lubricated by the diesel that comes from internal leakage. The pump has a leak off pipe on the cam box to drain off extra fuel that may build up.

The Super Major with a Simms Mechanical Governed pump has oil in the governor housing that has to be changed because internal leakage dillutes this oil and extra oil in the governor will slow down the operation.

The oil in here should be changed every time the engine oil is changed.

The remaining part of the pump, delivery valves, rack etc is again lubricated by diesel fuel.

So if you have a Fordson Major and someone has been filling the pump with oil they have been wasting their time.

regards

Brian
