Hi,
I have recently bought a Fordson Major. I don't exactly know what year model it is, the serial no. I found is 183J723. Glad if anyone could help me with that.

I have cleaned the fuel tank, and while I have it of, I thought that I could thighten the steering, because there is a loose play in the steering. I have heard that the steering muzzle can be tightened but I didn't find any screw. I removed the cover on the right side, but i found no tightening screw. Can the steering muzzle be tightened or can it not? If it can, is it possible to get some drawing of the procedure.
Thanks in advance, Roland

Before tightening your steering box, you
must determain what is making the steering
loose. Start at the front of the tractor
whth the wheel bearings. Then the wheel spindle bushings, the steering arms to the wheel spindle mounting, then the tie rod ends themselves, to the steering link ends, to the steering ball on the arm of the box.

Now you are ready to check the bushing play at the box output shaft. Check the steering box by disconecting
the steering link at the ball. Now turn
the wheel all the way to one side then to the other. Does it feel smooth? Or is there
a grinding feeling. When turned all the way
to one side look at the steering out put shaft, if holding a little tension does
this shaft show side movement? Does it
show oil leakage?
Check the mounting bolts of the box, broken or loose?

Results of your test of the box if it leaks
oil at the seal, the shafts has excessive side to side movement or the steering when turning is rough, it is time to rebuild the steering box and no amount of ajusting can fix it.

Worn steering worm and ball nut is common.
If everything is ok, refer to the manual for ajustment of the box. It is done by removing shims.
