Hello everyone, I hope you can help me. Having been brought up with Majors I have inherited a roadless 6cyl super major, I wish to put a live drive clutch in. Is the flywheel etc the same? I have access to a workshop full of fordson spares, how do I identify the live drive bits to collect them together, to get service exchange parts.

Tractor will be used on my farm for little jobs when the weather is fine, may even plough a little with 5f ransomes semi-mounted which came with the beast.

Neil

Neil,

I would be doubtful if it was possible to fit a live drive clutch on your flywheel. It is not a standard flywheel that took the clutch unit. You would also need a complete gearbox and PTO gear for the lower housing.

The live drive clutch would also be suspect on the 6 cylinder engine. It was at about its maximum HP load with the 55hp of the New Performance Super.

You should find that your Roadless has a 13" clutch to cope with the extra hp.

Brian (and all), as I said parts are not a problem. I have enough blue bits to make another tractor but no-one would know what year it was!

Are you warning me off the live drive clutch, which is why it will have the simple clutch?

Neil

Neil,

I don't think you will find a flywheel that will fit your Dual Clutch and fit your engine.

I would certainly not contemplate fitting a dual clutch to the tractor if it were mine.

Dual clutch spares in good condition are very hard to come by. Some have been out of production for nearly 20 years and, putting that sort of hp through one could use up a lot of spares very quickly especialy with the plough you describe.

I have seen dual clutches explode when put under sustained heavy load with a Super Major on steel wheels and a two furrow plough.

But this is only my opinion.

Good luck with what ever you decide. Those tractors are quite a rare beast.

regards

Brian

The live drive flywheel will bolt to your engine but in theory it should be re-baleneced with the cluth assy attached for the six cylinder.

As for the clutch standing up, Brian is right. However I know of one live drive super six here in Australia owned by Leo Wignell. He used to be a Ford Tractor dealer in the sixties and seventies and he converted a new super four to a super six because he needed a live drive. Fax him at +615795366 or look up his email on the fordson page at the ytmag site. He would know how that clutch stood up.

PS Bareco sell new live clutches but I dont know the price, to scared to ask. Probably cut of your leg and tell you its a flesh wound. ;-)
