Hello all, what size of wider wheels have the same rolling radius as the standard 12" wide fitment for getting more rubber on the ground. I will watch out for them at sales over the next few months.
Also which model of front weights were contemporary with a 61 super major, as I want to protect the front cowling and have it looking reasonably in period, and has anyone any for sale.

Hi

In the UK some tractors (rare) had 14 x 30 rears on non adjustable rims. This will blow you away, here in Australia, the standard fitment to the Super Major is 18.4 x 28. Thats what my tractor has but I imported a set of UK rims as those Aussie tyres are of no use with a Ransomes TS59 three furrow 12 inch plough.

Neil,

14x34,12x36 and 12x38 were all common. Don't confuse these with the new marking. 11x36 = 12.4x36, 12x36 and 12x38 = 13.9x36 or 38.

If you are going to use it for ploughing then you will need to match your wheel to the width of furrow. An 11x36 which was the standard tyre, is normally 12.4 inches wide on the ground under load so it will fit nicely down a 12" wide furrow but a 14" wide tyre which works out at over 15" wide when loaded will compact the turned work and give you problems matching.

Another way to get more rubber on the field would be to use standard sized radial tyres.

The weights were slab weights that fitted on special long studs that threaded into the four holes on the front casting. The bolts varied in length depending on the number of weights. They stuck out a long way and some people doubled them up, mounting the second lot on top of the first set.

regards

Brian

Brian, Tyres fitted at the moment are 12.4 x 36 on 11" rims as you say, fronts are 9.5 - 9 x 24. Although ploughing is an option, I am wanting to watch out for a wider set for better weight carrying in general use.
Thanks for the info. 18.4 x 28 sounds meaty, but is the radius the same for the 4wd ratios.

Neil,

I was forgetting the 4wd. You have to be really careful with the older vcersions to get the sizes right. I think I have the tyre size guide for your tractor somewhere in my papers so I will look around this weekend.
