I live in Australia and am trying to find out what model of fordson I have. The serial number is on the housing above the starter motor which is 979940 There could be a C in front of that.
Thanks

The number you quote does not seem to follow any Ford pattern. This may be because the tractor was re-numbered in Aus. Normally the number is stamped on the flange behind the starter or under No.1 injector.

We would need a clue on the year and what type of tractor it is: Model F or N, E27N Major, E1A Major petrol, kerosene or Diesel, Dexta or Super Dexta. Or at least is it a four cylinder or 3 cylinder, large or small.

Casting codes can also be a great help. These are on all cast parts and are usually something like A16K or even 3A16.

Even some of these details will help these chaps get pretty close to an identification.

Brian,
Thanks for you help. I hope the following information will help. She is a 4 Cylinder Diesel with fordson major badges on bonnet, the following numbers I found are on the block EIADDN-6015-E and on the head EIADDN-6050-G and on the transmission housing above the oil filler cap is N16U

I have found and old parts book for a power major and in the front of the book it says the following,For tractors produced prior to march 1956, the engine number is stamped on the left hand side of the flywheel housing immediately above the starter motor opening. (This is where the number I quoted was)
And for tractors produced from march 1956, the engine number is stamped adjacent to no. 1 cyclinder on the right hand side of the cyclinder block immediately above the push rod cover

Hope some of this stuff may help, I am after a workshop manual for her and am trying to workout what year and model she is.
Thanks

The numbers cast into the housings are part numbers and bear no relation to the date. The date code, which is the small number gives that part as November 16th 1953. If all other casting codes are around this date, I would suspect your tractor was exported to Aus. in spring 1954 about 6 months after it was built at Dagenham.

It looks like you have a Fordson Major Mk 1. Things to confirm this will be: Wide fan belt, timing notch on front pulley and pointer on gear cover, throttle through the block, stepped manifold porting, throttle on side not under steering wheel, breather straight from the valve cover behind the manifold into the manifold.

You will not have a live clutch as these could not be fitted to these tractors. The clutch cross shaft was too far forward. This was moved back nearly 2" to allow the clutch to be fitted in 1957 when major changes took place.

regards

Brian

Brian,
Thankyou for all your help I think that should help me with getting a workshop manual. You said that the timing marks where on the front pulley, I was told that the timing marks where on the flywheel and as yet have not found any this may explain why they are not there.
Thanks again

There are no timing marks, just a notch on the inner edge of the pulley that lines up with a pointer riveted to the timing cover. If you like I will mail you a picture.
