Hello!
Have a -61 super with a what I think is a mark3 engine(cast:18K4) fitted and original -61 Simms pump. Yesterday the pump coupling decided to separate in two pieces. Replaced the pump coupling today with one from another Fordson. I set the flywheel at 23 but marks on pump coupling didnīt match at all. Tried to adjust but marks point towards my feet??.
I found som other marks on the front part of coupling. When I lined these up with mark on pump housing a hand made mark appeared on the flywheel!!! In this position the engine started but does not run perfect(smokes and feels little weak).
Anyone out there who has seen this before?
Is there another way to check pump timing?
Is the marks on a coupling for a Minimec placed different than for a Simms??

Please help!

regards Magnus

The pump drive turns at half engine speed so the timing marks on the flywheel line up twice to the pumps once. You have to check the valves to find out when No.1 is coming to TDC before lining the marks on the pump coupling. Another way to do it is to watch the clamp bolt on the coupling. When the clamp bolt is below the shaft the engine is on No.1. Line the flywheel up to 23 then set your pump.

The marks on a Minimec pump are lined with a pointer on the top of the coupling not to the side.
Minimec's should be set at 21.

If your tractor is 1961, how did it get fitted with a Minimec? These did not come out till the middle of 1962. Has she had a new engine?

Hello!
Sorry I wasnīt clear enough. Tractor got a new engine back in 1982. This engine has castcode 18K4. The head and Injector pump were not replaced.
So Tractor is now equipped with 1964(I think) block,1961 head and 1961 Simms Pneumatic pump.
I have taken pictures of all marks but i havent got time yet to upload them. Will try this afternoon.

Thanks for quick reply

She's a little beauty. Wish I had had one like that when I was having to get wood for my old wood burner central heating. Now a lorry delivers my fuel by the tank load.

Thankīs for nice comment Brian.
Itīs a very good tractor for driving in forest. 4-5 tons of load is usually no problem. Lucky she has a diff lock, I donīt think she managed without it.
We take out around 100-200 cubic meters every winter and have done so since we bought her in 1982.
At the moment we have 75 trees laying down after the storm a couple a weeks ago and that is why Iīm eager to get those timing marks right.
Brian! Did you recieve my mail or should I post the pictures here??

Hi!
Brian!! Tried to time pump as you suggested in your mail but she didnīt start at all. Tried again today moving one mark for later timing and now she runs again. Will keep on moving to see where she runs best. Still smokes but maybe she needs to run for some hours to clear up. Thanks for all help.
