Perhaps a unusual question, and as I am Dutch, perhaps easier to be answered by fellow Dutchmen. I have the possibility to buy from a farmer a 6 cyl Major tractor. The engine is a Ford industrial engine, with about 100 HP. The conversion has been done nice, so no visible welding on hood or steering rods. Question is: what is a reasonable price for such a tractor? The farmer doesn't have a clue, me neither. He asks me to bid. The tractor is in good shape, might need a paint. Tyres, engine and hydraulics in good working state. Comes with beltpulley for PTO.

Other question: Were these 6 cyl tractors original build by Fordson, or were these 4 cyl models which were converted later by a dealer?

Thanks in advance for the answer

Hello,

Ford did not build 6 cylinder Majors. There are many tractors converted in history, either on farm or in a workshop. County and Roadless did offer Major based tractors with six cylinder engines.

When people talk about original sump/oilpan on their six cylinder tractor, then a not Ford made cast iron sump is mentioned, where the front axle lateral support can be fixed in. These sumps were cast by company's like roadless etc. A converted tractor without such a sump can be recognised when the front axle supports afe made different as on the standard types.

About the price, when you have to bid to a seller who does not know wat his tractor is worth, you now for sure in advance that your bid is to low. A bid on a tractor without a ask price will only be used as a guide about the value of the tractor.

A 6 cylinder Major is made to do lots of heavy work and to make long working days. So the clutch, gearbox and rearaxle may be worn much more as on a standard tractor, so don't think the value must necesarily be higher then of any other major 4 cyl.

Regards
Emiel

hi There,

I agree with Emiel about the value of these tractors
Take care because these tractors had a hard life and often be used for tractorpulling

So I bought her today!
My 58 Dexta has a big brother. And what a sound. Ran already out of fuel while waking up the village.
Seems that everything works properly.
The engine no. is 510E 6050E, can anybody tell how old she is? Where can I find the serial no?

Thanks!
Joep
