Hello everybody,

On my 1957 New Major, I have a'n oil lekages between de gearbox and the rear axlehousing.
At this time the oil is drained out of it. Now I wonder if I could split the tractor easely. Do I have to drain the gearbox to, or can it be done with oil in it. What is the easyest way to do this. Is there anything that needs special athention when doing the job? What happens with the pignonweel? And what about de transmission vorks? As you see, a lot of questions. Maybe someone can give me some answers.

Thanks Henk

Henk,

You have to drain the oil from both gearbox and rear axle.

Remove the PTO shaft.
Drop the PTO housing from under the gear box. This has two special dowel bolts, one either side. It is then a bit of a fiddle to get down as it is a very tight fit and heavy. Inside this housing is a seal that you will have to replace. It is a bit difficult and better if you can find someone with the special tools to replace it as it is a double lipped seal and is easily damaged. This can cause oil to leak in the way you are saying.

Remove the main gear lever and housing.

Remove the side lamp wire.

Remove bolts.

Support the front and rear axle. Block between the front axle and frame with wedges to stop this tilting. One half will need to be on something that moves. I would advise not doing this on a trolley jack. A crane/loader/digger or spliting trolley is best.

Move the two halves apart.

The pinon will slide out of the large gear leaving the gear box and crown wheel in situ.

Remove the large special nut on the large gear.

Remove the seal housing and seal.

You will need, large gear seal, PTO drive seal, Large gear seal gasket, housing gasket, PTO housing gasket, PTO selector gasket, rear PTO housing gasket, plenty of oil cans to drain oil into anf lots of large wooden blocks for support.

Take your time and have a care. It is not a bad job but needs those two elements. Time and Care.

Good luck.

Hello Brian,

Thank you for all the information. You told me to do the job with care and take my time. The last is what I don't have at this moment, so I'll do the job later. What I don't understand is, why de PTO housing has to be removed. I lookt on a vew different drawings and I can't see the reasen of it. Maybe i'ts because you think that the sealing somewhere inside the gearbox and rearaxle is broken or dammaged, but I think the oil is comming out of the seal between the two parts itself. Can you explane it to me please.

Thanks, Henk

Hi,

The PTO housing is sealed on the drive shaft towards rearaxle. There is no way you can change the seals without taking the pto housing off.

The hole in the rear axle housing where the pto extension shaft goes through, is smaller than the oil seal rings, so they can't go out that way. I tried to do so on the E27N Major, which has a identical construction, and also had to split the tractor in the way Brian desribed. I don't regret splitting the tractor at all.

For the full story, see Stevo's post on the E27N Board
