A few more shots of her and my mate ....

Note: Injectors are removed and openings plugged. (Rocker gear is also removed and stored. Oil filter as well.)

Ooooooo UGLY, eh?

And finally my expensive 1 HP Fuel Guzzler ...

A retired 1988 drop Standard Bred Pacer that had the unfortunate racing name of "Wee Wackem". We have had him for about 8 years I guess. Wife doesn't ride much now since cancer robbed her of the muscles in lower left leg 6 years ago.

Regards, Rick

Hello Rick,

Just remove the “Ugly guard” as you call it, and she will look pretty again, but leave the dozer blade for that gives a great look.

I wanted to say leaf here as it is but I read in another topic you have to split here.
I’m up to the same job next winter so keep them pictures coming.

Regards Henk

That looks interesting.
This may be a stupid question but what are the circular objects below the seat with a diagonal link? What part NSW?

regards Peter

G'day Peter,

The circular objects are moulded rubber blocks that are part of the Seat Suspension mechanism. I've provided a closeup photo below. I've often wondered about this seat arrangemnet as I haven't noticed any on this site. I don't know if it was a genuine Fordson Accessory for the world/Aus or an after market brand. As you can see, there is adjustment for the amount of springiness in the seat. Allows the seat to float as such so it can roll sideways as well as up and down.
Thanks for raising the question!!!

I'm situated 20kms west of Crookwell NSW and about 90kms (approx Nth) of Canberra. I'd love to know if there are any other members in my proximity. (I'm 250km drive from Sydney).

Cheers,
Rick

Chaps,

That is a Ford Rest-O-Ride seat. It was offered as an optional fitting but most farmers prefered the standard seat as it was cheaper and back problems, from driving tractors over rough conditions had not been heard of.

Yep, Ford Rest O Ride.It was standard fittment on New Performance Super Majors here in Australia.

It was standard on all New Zealand Spec Supers and I think also USA as well.

I have never seen this seat. The Brit farmers must have been more tight with the money! Rick I spent a couple of months near Mossvale (1984) and drove to Taralga via the Wombeyan caves road from Mittagong. This was in our friends ancient Datsun with a tiny spluttery engine! My wife (then Girlfriend) was working on a sheep farm between Taralga and the W Caves. Very exciting stuff for someone fresh from UK.
regards Peter

G'day

Just got back from spending the day down your way. I live in Sydney but have a little place down in Goulburn. My Super Major Backhoe will be heading down there as soon as it’s complete. Not long now I hope. The backhoe also has a front blade like yours but is operated by two rams yours seems to have one in the middle is that right? Don't have one of those Luxury seats though.

Kind Regards .........Dom

P.S. I forgot to ask you. In the top picture above the injector pump there is a cylinder that holds the diesel filter like mine, above that and to the left there is another, is that also a filter as mine doesn’t have that? Also the muffler looks odd. What's that pipe that seems to point down at 45 deg? Sorry mate just curious as I think they probably about the same year judging by the FL head.

My 57 Major also has 2x fuel filters, just like Rick's.Interesting to note though, that the first filter is before the primer pump.
My Aussie sorced 57 goes, Tank, Primer pump, first filter, second filter and then injector pump.
Rick, good luck with your super. Wish I had that blade at my place.
Dom, how about another update photo of your Super. Must be just about ready to go now.

Peter:
I haven't been down that road from Mittagong to W.Caves BUT I understand it to be pretty rugged going even for 4WD! My last year of School was at a boarding school at Mittagong in 1963. As posted earlier, a month later I got to sit on and operate a month old Fordson Super Major Loader Backhoe (Cranvel Conversion) at nearby Bundanoon.
A year ago, I used to visit a farm between Taralga and Wombeyan Caves .... to learn the Bagpipes !!! I haven't progressed with that venture, but it's a dream to be able to stand in my paddocks and play the pipes. The 17 year old teaching me has played in Edinburgh Tattoo a couple of times. Shire boundaries changed in past couple of years. Taralga is now part of Upper Lachlan Shire and DOM'S property is just outside the boundary near Goulburn. If you'd like to exchange stories off topic etc., you are welcome to use the email link.

Dom:
It was great talking to you on the phone earlier this evening. For the benefit of others, answers are:
It is a cartridge type fuel filter. The exhaust Muffler is pretty common on farm tractors in Aus. It is a cyclonic type spark arrestor system. The 45 deg pipe you see has a screw on cap for clearing out soot etc that is caught/settled out.
NOTE: As you are going to be taking your backhoe Super Major to your farm, keep in your mind that it is illegal to operate any type of tractor on a farm without a Spark Arrestor anywhere in Australia during the designated bushfire season which is now 6 months of the year!! (PS. I'm President of the Local Voluntary Bushfire Brigade too). I suggest you google Spark Arrestors Australia and you'll probably get a long list of activities that are restricted during fire season.

Kiwi Kev:
Blade would be a lot better if there wasn't so much slop (play) in the linkages. I can fix that with some effort. One main job I wanted it for was to maintain the gravel road up to my house. However, being an under the axle design, the mid section gouges the crown of the road when I'm trying to grade the gutters on the edge. I'll borrow a 3PL blade and try that. I like having the full directional adjustment but would prefer more ground clearance. Also it is only a single acting cylinder for lift!

Everyone:
I got to speak to DOM tonight and he is quite the charecter that his posts suggest. We intend to catch up some time in the not too distant future and I'm looking forward to it!

Thanks Rick

I'll look into that muffler and am looking forward to a face-to-face chinwag.

At the risk of sounding like a mutual admiration society, Rick is the type of Aussie country character you want to have around. Very switched on, full of life’s experiences because they have a go at anything and do what ever needs doing.
Here's a picture for you mate that I know we're both proud of.

Kiwi Kev
I'll post a couple of pictures I took a month or so ago on a new post.

Kind regards ......Dom
