Anyone know how to add an independant hydraulic service to a Fordson Power Major. The book says that there is a tapping to take a flow from the pump, but it is controlled by the 3 point linkage lifter, and if an independant service is needed '...an additional valve chest and control lever unit may be fitted to the ram cylinder housing'.

Do they mean an identical one to the 3 point linkage control, or was a special valve chest made? Anyone got the bits I need to do it????

Welcome to the board.

You would have to fit a second valve control to the front of the existing valve chest. They are out there but may take a bit of finding.

The other way to do it would be to fit couple of extra valves in a valve block, pipe it in to the port under your left leg on the side of the chest and a return pipe from the valve block to the filler cap at the back. You would then need to set the control lever in the up position and then use this valve to control what you need. It would be a good idea to have a pressure relief valve in this block if possible, set at a slightly lower pressure than the tractor relief valve. This would mean that this would blow and reseat. When the tractor valve lifts off the control handle has to returned to lower for that one to reseat.

Because of the design of the system there is no way to get an "independent" oil flow.

Brian, thanks for your welcome and response. So am I right in thinking that an identical valve block to the existing one will bolt on to the existing one, with the cover plate moved to the 'outside' of the two blocks?????

No, its a different unit. The normal one has the fittings for the cylinder, the extra one is just the valve gear.

Thanks Brian.

So what should I be asking for - is it a Fordson made specific item (part number??) or is it a generic bought in item that they used? Obviously I'll need to spread my net far and wide, so I better ask for the right thing!!!!

There was also a unit made by McConnell which bolted to the front of the valve chest of majors/power majors in place of the usual cover plate. This unit has a handle and an outlet to provide constant flow without having to use the 3pt linkage lever (no doubt was supplied with a hedgecutter or the like which needed a flow of oil to power a motor albeit not very large I suspect!). This can then be run through an auxiliary valve chest and return plumbed in through the rear axle filler plug. I have such a unit but have never seen another, must be one out there somewhere though!

Ed

Roadless, any chance that you could post a picture of said gizmo ? I take it that yours is in use and not available? When I get my machine shop back up and running maybe it would be possible to machine a special cover plate that had a suitable tapping mating with the pressure oil source?
