I've read that dexta's could lock the differential so both rear wheels turn at the same time but I've checked on my dexta and can't find any lever that does this. Did some not come with this option and if so can it be changed with minor modification?IP: Logged |

I do not have my parts manual in front of me, but I have reviewed this topic. Either in 1960, 61 or 62 locking differential became an option. I'll follow-on post with the correct date. You'll know you have the option if there is a little lever on the right hand side behind the brake pedals. It would take the right rear end of a donor tractor with locking differential to convert yours. Based on review of part numbers, the entire right rear end would have to be replaced, to include the differential spider. While I have never heard of anyone doing this yet, it may be possible. Expensive. Practical? Wayne

ANOTHER QUESTION ON THE LOCKING DIFFERENTIAL, MY 1963 SUPER DEXTA,HAS THE SMALL PEDAL BEHIND THE RIGHT BRAKE. IN THE PAST THE PEDAL WAS USE THE TRASFER POWER FROM THE SPINNING REAR WHEEL TO THE NON SPINNING TIRE,BUT NOT LOCKING BOTH TOGETHER.RECENTLY,MY DIFFERENTIAL PEDAL SEEM TO BE BROKEN.THE PEDAL JUST LIES FLAT ON THE FOOT PLATE, WITH NO SPACE FOR THE PEDAL TO BE PRESSED DOWN. COULD ANYONE HELP WITH THIS SITUATION?IP: Logged |

My parts book says the option began in 11-61. As for why your lever is laying on the running board, there must be a pin missing, a lever not connected or broken. Ultimately the linkage pulls down on the arm that goes into the axle assy, engaging the differential lock. Wayne IP: Logged |

Well... I have also had this problem. In my case, it was the barbs (cast-iron) on the gable of the differential. I solved the problem by buying a new (second hand) bush (E185-EB-9). I´m sorry for my english. Hope you understand what i mean, anyway. Otherwise... -Just ask! IP: Logged |

Wayne, are you saying that the diff lock was only on Dexta's after 1961? Or that it became an option after this date? I'm confused as I had dated My Dexta as a 1958 model and yet it has the diff lock.IP: Logged |

Paul, According to my literature the differential lock was only introduced on the Dexta after the 11/61, like Wayne said. Regards, Jimmy IP: Logged |

Chaps,11/61 seems to be the date of the introduction of dif. lock on the Dexta tractors and it was a method of locking the dif. NOT transfering power as has been suggested. The main cause of failure is how you use it. Most people wait until the wheel is spinning like mad before standing on the pedal. This puts huge strain on the locking collar. If you are lucky, just the corners wear off the collar and the dif. pedal returns up sharply, throwing your heel off. If you are un-lucky the collar breaks and you are faced with a fresh repair to sort out. The correct use of the dif. lock is to engage it BEFORE the wheels start to spin. If ploughing in the wet, the lock should be applied as the plough is lowered into work, for example. Don't forget to take your foot off the pedal and either dab a brake or de-clutch before trying to turn. The tractor will just go straight on otherwise. regards Brian IP: Logged |
