Chaps, I've almost finished restoring my 1963 Super Dexta, but I cant seem to find the downpipe for the exhaust anywhere. Most of the dextas in the UK came with the standard vertical exhaust up through the bonnet, but mine originally had the horozontal exhaust. I have drawn a blank with New Holland, and basically every part supplier in the UK as well. Some did'nt even know that Dextas came with underswept exhausts! So I was wondering if any of you guys on the continent or in America would have any idea on where to source this pipe. Any help would be greatly apreciated. Regards, Jimmy IP: Logged |

Do you think you could make your own by having a pipe bent at an auto muffler shop?------------------ don IP: Logged |

Don, I have tried to find another Dexta with the downswept exhaust on it so that I can get one made up the same, but I've drawn a complete blank. I can't find another one anywhere in the country. When I bought my tractor, someone had put a U bend on the manifold and run a silencer up the side of the bonnet, just like the Major's, so I have never even seen the downpipe up close at all. my 1961 dexta has got an underswept exhaust. it is still in one piece, though i don't know where you can get another one from. It looks fairly simple, and I reckon that it would be very easy to make up another one from some stainless pipe for example. then, use the existing flange and weld that on to the pipe. or, alternatively, make up another flange. If you want the meausrement of this I can do this if you want. ie. pipe diameter, dimensions of curve, etc etc.IP: Logged |

But given the design is so simple anyway, you could just make up the measurements yourself. It is a simple single curve, that runs down to a clamp underneath the footplate. then, a small round silencer that exits just behind the footplate. Basically, the only problem is the smell/smoke etc. very often there is a face full of diesel fumes. Also, when using in long grass there is the danger of setting fire to the whole field... Apart from that, teh benefits ar obviosely you can drive under trees okay, and the downswept exhaust is a lot more quiet. You have then got the option of simple bolting on a better silencer under the footplate to replace standard one.i think if you were doing a DIY underswept exhaust, simple find a standard small straight back box off a common car (ie. easy to replace in future). then, fix this in the position you want. Then, take measurements for the downpipe, and simply get this made up. if you wanted a real DIY cheap job.... get some flexi pipe for the exhaust downpipe and bend... might look a bit too rough though... I think if you just get the whole thing for an 8N and change the flange, you'd be allright. IP: Logged |

You might try Valu- Built supply here in the states. Also Agriline carries some parts as does Old20. BY the way I was at an auction Saturday here in the states and a 1960 Dexta that was running but stuck in reverse brought $3000.00 US. HAd brand new tires but was still to much.IP: Logged |

Solitaire, I dont suppose you have a web address or contact address for Valu Built? I have already tried Agriline - they have never seen one, And Old 20 were unable to help. I have restored everything else back to it's original condition, and the only bit of the tractor that I have not had lying on the garage floor is the gearbox, so I would like to find the proper exhaust for her if I can to complete the job. Sure thing. The web address is www.valu-bilt.com. Good luck, I know I hunted for 2 months for an exhaust manifold that wasn't angles and a gentleman from Scotland landed me one. Never hurts to ask. Luck be with you, RobertIP: Logged |

it looks like my 1959 dexta was prodused with underswept exhausts because the exhaust bend is not made for going through the bonnet, and if you turn the bend upside down it goes perfekt down and you can see that the hole trough the bonnet is made afterwords. in Norway it was not aloved with underswept exhaust because if you drived on a barn were there was dry hay, and if the came a spark out of the exhaust, it could start a fire.IP: Logged |

The silencer is available and the pipe should not be a problem to make yourself. Here's the Link: http://www.fordson-dexta.de/5012559490137330b/index.html IP: Logged |

I have just checked mine, and it appears there are in effect two bends in the pipe, one obviousely being the main curve, then the other, is sideways, to make it clear the bottom of the engine. I have noticed mine actually rubs on the sump anyway, so possibly it was one that has been made up at some point in time.(slightly incorrectly)IP: Logged |

Chaps, According to the original pictures I have in a book, there seems to be 3 bends in the underswept exhaust. There seems to be one slight bend just under the manifold, then there is the 90 degree under the bellhousing, and then another slight kink under the footplate, just before it goes into the rear silencer. New Holland have sourced me an original burgess silencer box from old stock, but this pipe really has me stumped! Value-bilt do not have any listings for it on their website, just the silencer box. Just dont know where to go next! Thanks for all your help. Regards, Jimmy IP: Logged |
