I am in the process of fitting a new loom to my standard 1960 Dexta. It has basic wiring at the moment (no lights) and all wires are red!! I am now wiring expert and I'm doing a lot of head scratching at the moment.

There seem to be a couple of wiring diagrams around. The diagram I am looking at only shows 4 connections to the light switch and separate ignition switch. I have a 5 connection switch with the central connection labelled "coil" not helpful being a diesel! I guess that this the equivalent of the separate ignition switch, would I be right?

Hi,

I do not have a wiring diagram, but may there is one in the shop manual on www.fordson-dexta.de.

Otherwise, I would try to find a new one, electricity can cause you very nasty problems.

Regards
Emiel

Thanks Emiel,

I am looking at two wiring diagrams that are around via the web, neither exactly matches what I have in my new loom.

I have gone back to basics and worked out where each of the major components should connect to(i.e. dynamo, starter, regulator, ignition switch, heater button & heater coil). I think I am getting there now as I am beginning to understand the logic of the system.

As you suggest I will be very cautious as I would hate to see it all go up in smoke when I connect the battery!!

Chris,
I just woke up from my winter-sleep. What's the problem with the wiring diagram? There are differant diagrams used over the years. Please have a look at the voltage regulator. Is your fitted with 4 or 5 terminals? I have a few diagrams in my Fordson-Archive and can send you a pdf-file or much better: I put it on my website. Regars Stefan www.fordson-dexta.de

Hi Stefan,

I have a 4 terminal regulator. I have downloaded both diagrams from your site (an excellent site, it has been a great help to me during my retoration project, many thanks)

The wiring diagram that I have seen shows a separate ignition switch but I think that I have got my head around this now. Part of the problem is that I have is that the new loom does not exactly follow the colour coding used in the plan.

The main problems that I have had is the main battery supply to the ignition switch and the wiring for the heater switch.

There was a short section of wiring attached to the loom which I now guess is the battery feed from the regulator to the ignition switch. The other concern that I have is that the wire that appears to supply power from the ignition switch to the heater switch is only small gauge and I was concerned that the drain when using the engine heater would be too high for the gauge of wire. I have therefore run another wire in parallel just to be safe!

I currently have an alternator but have ordered a dynamo to return the system to its original configuration. I will have wait for it to arrive to test the system out.
