Hi all - I am restoring a dexta, and am struggling with the wiring. I have a diagram from a tractor with a seperate ignition and light switch, however I have a combined switch, which has a "coil" terminal in the middle. Having looked back through some posts, I notice someone else managed to figure out how to wire his up, but didn't explain the detail, so I'm after a bit of asssitance please. I've seen a diagram from a major that that the red wire from the starter switch going to the "coil" terminal, is that the same on my dexta? Thanks in advance, Matt IP: Logged |

Hi Squatch, welcome to the board. Does your tractor run on petrol? Then i may have an idea.Until a few years ago i drove a Dodge M880 pickup truck. With a pretty impressive engine. During startup the startermotor would draw so much power that the voltage dropped to 9 volts. The coil however would prefer 12 volts to produce strong enough sparks. So what Chrysler did was install a coil which needed 9 volts. Now once the engine was running of course the whole circuit was back to 12 volts (and some) thanks to the alternator now charging,so the coil would be toasted. So in the circuit was an extra resistor, lowering the voltage to 9 volts during running, but bypassed during starting. Now i don't have a petrol Dexta,so this idea could be utter bollocks when it comes to Dextas, anyway i hope it is helpful... Greetings from the Netherlands. Rob.

Matt, the "coil" terminal delivers the glow switch, the horn button and the small switch on the top of the starter motor with energy. I can send you a diagram by e-mail ... just let me know. ------------------ Best Regards Stefan ----------------------- www.fordson-dexta.de IP: Logged |

That sounds like a regular switch on a diesel. I have one like that, but there's no coil in the switch. What does that coil do?IP: Logged |

Rob,early tractors were fitted with a combined "light-igniton-switch". Later the tractors were fitted with two switches, a light switch and a igniton switch, because the early switches were not waterproof and caused to problems. The "Coil" terminal is the same as "15" on modern vehicles ... ------------------ Best Regards Stefan ----------------------- www.fordson-dexta.de IP: Logged |

Hi all - thanks fo taking the time to reply - yes, I can confirm that the tractor is a diesel one, so there is no coil per se. Stefan - if you have a diagram you could mail me, I would be very grateful - would certainly help stop me making any more wiring errors that lead to the battery terminals melting!!!!!! Thanks very much, Matt IP: Logged |

Hi all I have been going through the same head scratching with a combined ignition and light switch this weekend on my '59 Dexta. I also have a 4 terminal regulator box. I would really appreciate it if Stefan/Matt were able to send me the same diagram so I can make sure that I have it right before the big switch-on. Many thanks Regards John IP: Logged |

Thanks StefanChecked the new wiring with the diagram and it looks like I have it right! Have it all on the Dexta now but sorting out some other bits before I fire up. However I have cracked open the mainfold heater switch and had a fiddle and a clean and now have on operational glow plug for the first time. Now I need to turn my attention to the lights. I have fitted some new lenses and reflectors to the original headlights but I am not sure about the wiring. I don't have any wiring on the back of the bulbs as a clue, just the terminals. The bulbs are RAJULEX 12v 45/40W. Can anyone help me with which terminal is which when viewed from the rear of the bulb, eg left, top and right terminals. Thanks again for the fantastic help on this forum. John IP: Logged |
