Need help identifying more about my tractor. Posted before on YT Mag, and responders wanted to see a picture. Here it is. Clearly, the serial # matches a 1968, but what kind of 4WD modification is on it?
--4WD works perfect
--Power steering works
--other than alternator with no tach drive, which the solution is available, the tractor is perfect.
--I need more info, when time to buy parts.
I know the Ford NH 3930 and 4610 are similar 4WD tractors, are the parts similar? Look at the picture on the web site. Give me feed-back.

Hey Wayne,

Go to the misc section of this board and look for my post on 7 apr 04. The third from the bottom. I ended up selling that tractor becuase I was afraid I couldn't get parts for the axle. I think I had the italian version and they went out of business. It was from an old WW2 jeep I think.

How is the communte going?

Tony

Tony,
I am not really worried about axle parts. Normally, I can take any bearing or seal, etc to a specialty shop and get a replacement.

My concerns are steering linkages, PS cylinder, which I had re-sealed and stuff like the throttle linkage.

I have already ordered the alternator with tach drive conversion kit. Bought a new kit off eBay, at $100 less than other kit prices. Will install the end of Feb on trip down. When I get the gages all working, this tractor will be perfect; ready to work.

I have searched around, and Westendorf TA-26 will be a bolt on loader with joystick and quick disconnect bucket. Lifts 3K.

Tractor runs out great, PTO brake works and independent clutch engages perfect. No leaks, now, good brakes. Engine does not consume oil, and starts good.

4WD and emergency brake are great. I have one U-joint on F-drv shaft with play, but a shot of grease snugs it. EZ to find part. This thing will climb a wall. Should make a great loader tractor.

As for the commute, AUGGHH@@@!!!
Came down Friday, and spent Saturday installing a hidden gooseneck hitch and drop in fiver hitch on the Chevy-Cummins. I am finished with the required 2" lift kit to install the Cummins. Truck is returning to like new.

I am going to keep my 4x4 4000, just want to know some facts about it.

How is the Dexta loader coming?

Wayne

The loader project is going very slow. Just after I saw you they sent me to Texas to work on those pointy nosed things. I’ve been catching a plane early Mondays, then back home late Friday night. I’m hoping that this will end soon but …………... They want me to move there but not a place for me. So as long as I have a choice, I’ll do they commute. I have the second blue girl almost ready to fire up. I’m waiting for a battery tray from Ollie but it seems to be taking forever to get here. Once I get her running and satisfied with my workmanship, I’ll install that thing.

Wayne,

I have deleted your double post.

Thats a great little tractor. I love 4000 4WD's best of all of the world series. It used to be joke when I did my courses at Fords that they could be pretty certain who would grab the TW35 or the 4610 4WD for field work.

Your tractor looks like a standard 4000 with an add on 4WD. These units were made here in England by either County or Roadless. County were the only company who, for certain made a 4000 version before the Ford own version, The year would be right because the tractor is about 1968 when they were first produced. The hubs look a little different though. If it is the County version, the main components come from a 3000 rear axle.

The other possibility is that it is a US built unit. If my memory is correct, Tony Jacobs who posts on the YT site has something to do with them.

Yes, Tony Jacobs bought all the parts from Elenco when they when out of business. Tony Lives up in Massachusetts. I spoke with him about my axle last year. He posted his email as back then as TJACOBIE5@AOL.COM along with a phone number of 1-413-267-5087. Your axle looks like mine did and he thought it was made by an Italian company that used axles from old World War II Willys. I’d send him your picture and ask him what he thinks.

The axle from Italy was the Manual axle. This was an ex World War 2 US truck design. Scrap Jeep axles were used in the early days.

This company then became part of Selene of Turin. Selene made axles for Ford tractors in Europe and the British company that handled them was Roadless. Selene was taken over by Schindler who the supplied kits to Ford direct after Roadless went out of business. After 1985 Schindler stopped supplying axles and Ford went to ZF and Carraro.

Sorry, for not posting again earlier. My computer at work exclusively prohibits "Oscars" site. So the only time I look at Oscar's is in NC.

Since starting this topic, I have found leads on County Four 4000 conversions. This is in fact the model. I have found a manual for the tractor, exclusive to the Conversion.
By rough count, I have located 8-10 of these in the US, one contact with one in Italy, and many mentions of the similar County 4600 in the UK.
I will add my details to my web site, and when again in NC, pop back on Oscars site and check in.

Well, Tach worked perfect at first, but never registered hours. Then cable broke. Guess I need a new cable, and I will dis-assemble and lube the tach rollers. Worst I'll mess it up...

I have doutbts now, that I really have a Ford County 4000 Four. If you look on my web site at pictures, I have a picture of mine and a Ford County Ford 4000.

My tractor has the steering tie-rod linkage behind the axle, all county 4000 Fours I have seen pictures of, have the tie rod in front of the axle.

Additionally, the County 4000 conversion has a dog clutch which engages by pulling up on a handle, similar to a verticle emergency brake release. Mine is a different transfer, with a long lever you push forward to engage.

Also, my tractor has flat hubs at the front rims, but all county conversions have hubs that stick out a few inches with a colt on end cap.

I do not know exactly when my tractor was converted, or with what kit. But it works perfect.

I have found sources for tie rod ends, and u-joints, so with a tight axle with no leaks, I do not fear looking for parts.

Yes, it is a Carrerro axle, but what vintage... I am still looking.
