Hi guys,

Dad and I have decided to do a small bit of mechanical restoration on our 6X Ford 3000 Super Dexta.

Firstly the handbrake is not working is this easy to fix and what is required to do it?

Secondly the lift is very poor and dangerous on her - its ok when you are used to her and with the front loader but it could rise without any warning. The lift is poor and can drop with any sort of load on her and is very slow to raise and even then it just "judders" up. Any ideas on what is wrong and how to fix it.

All help much appreciated especilly diagrams as I have no manual for this tractor.

Cheers
Colm

Colm,

We need a little more information please. There were two types of handbrake fitted to those tractors. One was a separate unit with two discs and an actuator down against the PTO selector. All that this would require is some discs and a good freeing off.

The second was a lever only that worked on the foot brakes. If this is faulty your foot brakes could also need adjusting, cleaning or relining.

The lift being uncontrollable would indicate to me a fault with the operator rather than the lift
It would suggest that you are trying to work the lift in Position control not Draft control. The selector lever should be parallel to the top cover, not pointing downwards.

In Draft control the loader will either be up or down. There is a neutral point but it is a little difficult to find. In Position control however the lift can be totally erratic and actually go into a raise with the control lever in the lower position.

The juddering you talk of is caused by a number of things. All which are reasonably simple to cure. First check your oil level. This is a square headed plug on the side of the transmission, under your lift levers and near your right ankle. IT IS NOT THE ONE WITH A SCREW DRIVER HEAD. If you remove this one you will be in trouble as you have to take the lift off to get it back.

Oil should run out of this plug. If it does not you will need to put some in the rear axle through the filler at the back. Normal 20/30W will do.

An additive can be used to improve the operation of the lift. This can be got from CaseNewHolland or 1 gallon of paraffin can be used instead. Do not use diesel.

If you are using a loader it is permissible to overfill the back end with oil by between 3 and 5 gallons.

The pumps have to have the air bled out of them. This is done by undoing an allen plug on the head of the pump and cranking the engine over on the starter until all the air is expelled.

You should then fit the plug back while still cranking the engine to ensure air does not get back in.

If this does not cure your problem it is possible that your intake filter is blocked. This will mean removing the lift and the handbrake unit and fiddling the filter out of the rear axle. Not a hard job but very time consuming and a bit like a Chinese wire puzzle.

Kind regards
Brian

Hi Brian,

Thanks for that info.

I think the handbrake is the first one you mentioned because its got a big casing beside the PTO lever and is not like the one on our 3600, which is linked to the brakes.

As for the lift, the lever down at the right hand side that you talk about is always in the horizontal position.
