today I was given a County 654
I got it for free.
Engine is seized. I think it has some frost damage.
Lift for the scraper blade is still on it. It have been used in the forest.

Re: today I was given a County 654
Thank you. I have two tickets for this weekends lotto
I tried to make the previous owner let me take the winch for it, but it was no good. I feel happy anyways
what kind of engine should I be looking for if this one is toast?

Re: today I was given a County 654
To the County experts.
Is the forestry-equipment standard County items, or something made locally. Looks professionally done. What about the "cab" ?
What about the reinforced rear rims? Does not look like a farmer have done this.

As Far as i am aware county made the forestry changes at the factory, you could order exactly what spec you needed.
Osbournes at romsey hampshire are now the owners of all county rights and have a large range off parts on the shelf,

Re: today I was given a County 654
super6,
that makes sense. my 654 is a model "4 F". Can this mean a Super-4 Forestry?
I am removing the setup for the front blade to gain access to the engine.

Nice gift, frode!
My 1164 is a type 8F and it's not a forestry tractor, so I don't think that the F means forestry.

Re: today I was given a County 654
JC, ok! So that rules the F out
I took of the head yesterday. Cylinder 1 and 2 had some water on top of the pistons. I replaced it with wd40, and will let it soak for a couple of days. Maybe I can get it to turn.
Both the cab and setup for the front blade is some serious stuff. This have to be County items or at least some 3rd party stuff. No extra welds from the farmers workshop anywhere, not bad for a ~50 year old machine. You would normally see rests of some repair on these items.

Re: today I was given a County 654
Ok. I took all the forestry gear and "cab" off. Removed the head and found some water in each of the cylinders. Engine would not turn. I removed the water, and filled each cylinder with wd40 and let it soak for a week. I got the crank to turn, replaced the head gasket and put the head back on. Injection pump was stuck, I removed it and got that one free too, I now have diesel to each of the injectors. Previous owner had screwed up the threads in the feed pump. Replaced that one too. Replaced oil filter, diesel filters, thermostat and radiator cap. Put on a new exhaust. Got the three flat tires repaired. One wast missing the valve, one had a puncture and on the last one the valve had disapared inside the tyre.
Engine had little compression when I turned the engine by hand. So I didn't have my hopes very high. Tried to crank it on the starter, and nothing happened. After I hit it with a hammer I got it to turn, but very slow. Starter starts smoking after 5 seconds, and the cables for the relay get very hot, that explains the melted wiring loom (I hotwired it).
So, we tried to tow it behind my neighbours Fendt 308. It didnt start, but I got to test everything. Gearbox is ok. Clutch is fine. Brakes works wonderfully. PTO engages. Hydraulics operates good and the power steering works wonderfully.
This is my first time "driving a county".
I still think it was a bargain
Time to get pull the engine apart and replace the piston rings. They must be stuck.

Have to replace cylinder liners, pistons and rings.
Will the front weight from a 1164 fit my 654?

Re: today I was given a County 654
Sorry for the lack of updates!
Nick,
Engine has got new liners, pistons, rings and bearings. Engine have had the valve seats and valves grinded. Going onto the tractor again this weekend. Will post some pictures and maybe a video of it running
I have also got my hand on a front blade and a double drum winch for the back

Re: today I was given a County 654
Engine is running good! Had some problems starting it until i figured the injection pump was 11 degrees off
I have moved on to the hydraulics and pto. My pto will not stop turning, I think the brake pad is worn since I can hold it with my hands. Is this a common part that wears? Any other common problems with the clutch/brake assemblu for the IPTO? I want to make sure I dont have to take this beast apart again after I have painted it

Re: today I was given a County 654
Brake pad wear is common and so is "oil drag" between the plates which keeps the shaft turning as you say. You can remove the PTO clutch pack from the top on your tractor after taking out the top drive shaft from the rear. Not the PTO shaft but the drive shaft behind the square plate above it. On some of the later tractors this is not possible but I have done it many times on the "X" series.
Even with a new brake pad you may not find any improvement. It was not until the system was re-designed and a band brake fitted that the problem was cleared.

Thank you, Brian!
I have the top off, and can see what you mean about taking it out. I will change the clutch discs and brake pad. I saw the band brake you are talking about in the parts catalog. Can this be fitted to the earlier model?
