I got the level spot on when filling the engine up with new oil. However after running it up and it had stood for a while I saw that the oil level had gone up to around 1/4" above the Full level mark on the dipstick.
Should I drain some off or will this be okay??
By the way Jos, I got a nice black arm and banged my head on the steering rod
Thanks Brian I am sure that it will too These modern oils are very clever they go in reddish green colour and turn black by the time they reach the dispstick.
I must say that it is poor design on the aircleaner as you cannot get the base sump off without detaching the whole thing, No wonder mine had a load of thick gack at the bottom.
I will never be a mechanic but I enjoy the challenge
Of course i don't know your tractor,but here's how mine works.
The big "hoseclamp" around the aircleaner must be loosened quite a bit.
Then the basesump can be turned.
And also the hoseclamp itself.
Now the opening in the hoseclamp will at a certain point line up with a sort of curved ridge on the top of the aircleaner.
The bit that stays put.
Then with some turning and wiggling you should be able to lower the sump.Probably the clamp will come off too.
When putting it back remember to turn it again or it won't clear the bonnet.

Thanks Rob, I did try to wiggle it free like you said but I obviously did not get it in the right position to release it. Thinking about it though in retrospect the bottom part of the gauze filter had stuck to the top case so that the oil bath bit slipped down but would not clear. When I stripped it off it the bottom gauze part came free with a tweak so I probably could have done it without stripping it all back. I read how to do it in the service guide linked to here and it said strip it off. I must have read the wrong bit
