Super Major live trany

Post by BearCreek Majors »

I pulled the transmission out of my Super tonight to clean & replace seals before setting the motor back in. I found the lock nut on the back of the upper shaft loose and the Woodruff key in the shaft sheared off. Anyone run across this before? Not sure if it was run low on oil or what. Tomorrow I’ll pull out the sliding gear and look to see if the bushing is galled up.

I found the problem this morning. The locknut on the back of the upper shaft worked its way loose and into the upper shaft in the back trany, thus wedging the front upper shaft between the rear upper shaft and the front input shaft causing the two front shafts to try welding themselves together, and shearing the key. After looking closer this morning I could see the scar marks on the two shafts. I’m thinking the fix will be Loctite.

Tiger thanks for the comment, not real sure about the shop being clean though.
I’d like to say I’m not a braggart but that would make me a liar as well, the shop is a 35' X 60' quonset up on 3’ walls this makes it useful to get cabinets, racks, etc, up against the wall without losing floor space from the curvature of the wall. The new vehicle lift I got two years ago when the price for scrap iron went ski high, other than that I made or scrounged most all the equipment. You can see the black sand blasting cabinet by the back door was made from a 275 gal fuel oil tank. I have a little bit of a fetish for tools and the shop, it’s my castle!

Hi,
I had the same problem with my gearbox. The nut was loose and the thread on it was damaged. I got a new one in the local New Holland garage. It cost €10 here in Ireland. The storeman said it was a common wearing part and he had sold a lot over the years.
