Hard to start petrol

The only way I can get reliable engine starts is to block the carb inlet completly with my hand. The choke butterfly closes properly but is not sufficent to start the engine. Runs ok when it does start.

Removing the pipe between the rocker cover and manifold and blocking the hole at the manifold end and it will start on the choke.

So it seems like an air leak through this pipe? The banjo bolt at the rocker cover end of this pipe comes apart as shown in the picture. Is this all there is supposed to be or should this be a valve of sorts?

I wonder if your manifold gasket is leaking or even if you have a hole in the manifold. Mine will start and run without the breather fitted although it does rev more.

As I have worked Dotty harder this year with the plough, she has run better and improved every day. The governor is now working well and the engine is very smooth when, before, although she ran reasonably well, she now seems much smoother.

Hi,

This is taking me back to my Triumph days, but I seem to recall a PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve being fitted between the manifold and the rocker cover. It may be that the banjo bolt you have was that valve, but is missing a part, possibly a ball and maybe a spring. It seems silly to have a fitting that can be disassembled only to have a wire loop in it which would do nothing for function.

Idealy the valve should close at high vacuum ie choke on and only open at high throttle, low vacuum.
