Don't worry about whether the pump may be broken or anything else.

Drain the oil from the rear transmission. There should be 40 litres of oil, and maybe 10 litres of water, so have enough containers to catch it all. Remove the filter from the rear transmisssion and clean it.
Depending on how much sludge is in the filter, as to what steps you do next. If the current oil is the colour of bailey's, be prepared to buy yourself 40 litres of new oil.

What are you wanting to do with the tractor? ie mow a horse paddock once a month, work it every second day on the farm, or as a show tractor.

If you have a digital camera, please ask and we will help you to load photos onto your posts. (we've all heard the phrase, a picture saves a thousand words)

Get to the stage of having drained the oil and cleaned the filter and let us know what you've found.
We're hear to help you, but you need to help us also.

Maybe I should take on Brian's status of 'GRUMPY GRANDAD while he's otherwise occupied.

Have you changed the oil and cleaned the filter yet.
If so, how was it.
Have you put an oil pressure guage in the hydraulic lift to check hydraulic pressure. This will tell you if there's pressure to lift the link arms. If the filter is blocked, the pump will not get any/much oil to build pressure to lift the link arms.

If your filter is anything like mine was it will not pass any oil. Mine was not only plugged but also flattened by
the pump suction force. You must check and clean the filter plus change the oil if necessary before attempting
any other repair. Also If there is a lot of debris around the filter it may be necessary do carry out further cleaning
which will involve taking the top cover off the rear end.

It's not about being a mechanic, it's about being methodical and systematic in your approach to the problem.

I would advise anyone to start at the start, and then work their way through the fault finding sequence.

Looking at it another way, you're going to go to work today, first thing you do is
wake up, and then you're going to
get up, and then
get dressed, maybe have some
breakfast, or
walk the dog, then go outside and
hop in the car, and then
drive down the road to go to work.

but you don't try and get in the car before you get out of bed

I like your analogy, Kev. If you get dressed before you get in the shower, you're gonna have a bad day

You are talking about an unloading valve, icom102. I don't know of anyone that sells one to fit your lift, but you won't know if yours is bad until you do some more testing.

Most likely it would not be the valve, but the spring that controls it may be broken or weak. Or it is just plain rusted stuck. Dandy Dave!
