Cleaning hydraulic filter
Do I need to remove the whole hydraulic "top" or could I open that circular cover thing at the right side of the axle/hydraulic housing?

Re: Cleaning hydraulic filter
It's a top off job in my opinion. The circular part on the right is the hydraulic pump. Removing the pump may give access to the return filter but this is fixed to a pipe that runs vertically from the top using some o-rings to seal against the casting. Getting at the metal gauze suction filter would be made difficult as the driveshafts run throughout the centre.

For more images of the hydraulic system - pump and lift cover - you can go to my restoration journal:

Starting with photo number 450, there are several shots of my center housing - taken before disassembly. Removing the lift cover really isn't a terribly difficult job, plus you'll have a chance to evaluate other things while in there.
