I noticed oil leaking from rocker cover on my '57 major diesel, went to tighten the bolts a bit and the front one broke!! Wasn't the bolt that broke, oh no, it was the threaded part on the rocker shaft that broke!! Only a tiny little bit of it left. Any ideas on how to sort it or will I have to replace the whole shaft?
I will post a pic tomorrow.
Regards

Re: I broke it!!!
Its ok I've just thought about welding a couple of nuts onto the rocker shaft.

Bleucraig,
Glad you have a solution for the problem. Never the less, could you make some pictures from the broken part and how you have done the repair.

Re: I broke it!!!
Do you still have the piece that broke off? If so, I would clean it up, braze it back on, and then run a tap through it.

I think welding will give to much heat and wil disvorm the bearing. Better brase it as JC says and use silverbrase.
Kind regards, Henk

Take out the rocker shaft and replace the it with a used part. Even a complete rocker shaft is not not expensive from wrecker. Important that it is from correct engine. Various rocker arm lengths exist.

Re: I broke it!!!
I thought quite carefully about this then decided to try welding it, if it went wrong I would source another part.
I welded in place a section of threaded rod (M8x1.25) by welding just a little section at a time trying not to generate too much heat. It seemed ok so I did the same with the other bit. Now I have two pieces of threaded rod sticking up which I can slide the rocker cover over then tighten down with two nuts.
I will post pics soon.
Regards
Craig

Congratulations on your repair job; it is what I would have tried first. Replacements from a wrecker are fairly easy to come by but being a cheap old yankee, I like saving money!

Never give up!

Me too! Working in a garage helps. My boss is quite nice about letting me use bits and pieces.Kim wrote:Congratulations on your repair job; it is what I would have tried first. Replacements from a wrecker are fairly easy to come by but being a cheap old yankee, I like saving money!
