major hydraulics

Post by steelman »

I renovating a 1953 major and have a problem with the linkage arms, they will not hold up. I have been advised it could be the ram seals. How do I get the ram out for resealing?

Steelman,

Welcome to this board.

Could be a number of things, but starting with the piston gland seems the best.
It's real easy. I'm working on a problem at the hydraulic system so I've removed the unit a few time lately.
Just unscrew the six bolts, tap with a hammer when the unit is not coming loose. The cylinder will come out at the same time because the O-ring will keep it in place. Use a screwdriver to get it off. There will be some oil leaking out, so some cotton would be handy. Try to keep the paper seal complete.
After you have removed the valve housing you can remove the cylinder. Than let the piston slide out to the back.
Replacing the gland is simple. Put the piston back along the front side, but remove the O-ring before. It's a bit of a struggle to get the piston rod into the cylinder but it can be done. Then put the valve housing back in place.
Kind regards, Henk
