My old bottle jack is giving up. Not holding the pressure. probably needs new seals.

It's a Lake and Elliot 4 ton jack, very handy around a tractor.

Have been told that the seals inside are leather.

Seems a shame to chuck it away, so does anybody know who can repair these jacks? or supply parts?

The company has closed now, and their factory is now a housing estate.

as an aside, what jack oil are people using in theirs?

If you can pump it up then I would say it is the seals around the piston as you suggest.
Why not undo that big nut and see what sort of seal is under there.
I bet a modern O ring would be a good replacement unless its a special profile, if it is special then try googling oil seal specialists.
I've just done that and there seems a good selection of suppliers out there. You have nothing to lose.
Regarding the oil, why not use what your tractor takes?

I was told by a Hydraulic Jack repairman years ago to use anti Wear Hydraulic oil in these types of jacks. I got a kit for a 5 ton floor jack here a few years back and rebuilt it. Best thing I ever did. Works like new for about 1/10th, or less, of the cost of new. Dandy Dave!
