Thank all of you!
...After much work, much help from all of you and my friend Bill I now have my first tractor at age 69.
...Believe it or not the coupler on the injector came lose and after many times trying to start it Bill said it was the problem. I found broken welds. Welded it and re-timed it and WOW!!!
...I have pictures of all of it but don't know how to post them.
...Water pump was screaming so I ordered a new one. Ronnie at Suncoast Tractor in Florida was great and it cost $80 but that's not bad. My wife ended up on the engine and with her little hands got the thing off because we couldn't get the pulley off.
...Off to do my first dig and a hose blew on the Wagner W7 front loader. 30 foot sheet of oil covered me and the tractor.
...All is well now and here is a video to prove it. Thanks again guys for all your help.

Re: Thank all of you!
Welcome to the board. I'm glad that we could help you out.
Your Major sounds good and looks pretty decent, too. Loader tractors are fun to play with, aren't they?
When I saw your video, I was wondering if you were related to Charlie Daniels, but after I saw the next one, I realized that I should have been thinking Lynyrd Skynyrd instead.

...OH! also an electrician, instrument tech and project manager for 50 years, Retarded now.
...I love this tractor, I always wanted one and this one fits the bill. It has the flail mower and scraper and after repair costs and parts I'm at $2,000,00 total.
...I cannot believe that after a month and a half of trying to get it running it now starts instantly. Aren't diesels supposed to be hard to start?
...I read everything here trying to solve my problems and that is why I say thanks to all of you.

Re: Thank all of you!
I guess that you didn't need that link that I forgot to put in my last post. It looks like you've got the picture posting thing figured out now.
Welding the coupler to the shaft is one way to fix it. I guess its the only way without buying parts. The only thing that matters is that it worked.
I'm a little farther north in NorCal than you are. Do you still live around the Chico area?
Your tractor looks kind of familiar. Did you buy it in Oroville?
Your band sounds good. I'll have to watch more of the videos when I get a chance.

Re: Thank all of you!
Welcome Aboard Matey!
Glad you have the old Major Turning and Burning Again.
It was one of those things. If an experianced mechanic was not there to look it over and see the problem, we could have pondered over the problem for a long time from a distance on the internet and not gotten very far. It is not really an approved way of fixing it, but at least you have it back together and running. If the shaft, or coupling drive is hardend, the welds may crack and break again. Just keep an eye on it. Dandy Dave!

Re: Thank all of you!
...Well I'll explain some things. First of all yes, I did buy it from a fellow from Oroville but probably not the one you are thinking of (there were two). I bought it from one of the members here who posted it on Facebook (one of my friends). 20 miles from Chico is where I live and have since 73.
...Many hours on the phone, computer and working on the tractor trying to find out why it wouldn't stay running prompted answers of all kinds. Water in the fuel, air, bad injector pump, bad injectors (previous owner insisted that was it), timing and many other reasons came to the front. I had checked everything and finally had my friend Bill come over and check it out because he knows diesel and is very well versed in farm equipment. We worked on it for about 3 hours. We set the timing 4 times and each time it started instantly and ran until I shut it off. It would not start again each time so we knew the coupling was slipping. It did run so good when it ran that I had hope we could fix it.
...I took the pump off and found the key missing and both the shaft and coupler waffled out beyond practical repair. I know welding was not the proper way to fix it but that's the way it had been fixed before. I modified a new key and welded it in place along with cleaning, filing and tightening the coupler before the weld.
...I replaced the water pump without pulling the radiator. The front loader prevented me from getting in and doing the wrench work so that is where my wife came in and did it from the top as I just could not at 6 feet and 250 pounds get in there.
...I now have about $2K in this tractor and I am very pleased with it.
...55 years experience with hundreds of Chevy (El Camino and Camaro) and other cars rebuilds, painting, body work, racing, restoration I have done it all and often but never a diesel (except to pull one out of my 80 Chevy pickup and replace with a 405 Olds).
...I am totally amazed at this diesel and how simple it really is.
...Thanks again you guys. Your discussions and ideas really helped me go in the right direction.

Re: Thank all of you!
That's the tractor I thought it was, Fuzzy. That broken shaft and coupler explains why we were never able to help Tim fix it, without seeing it in person. I was going to look at it when I visited my in-laws in Paradise, but I never made it. The in-laws usually come here, to visit, since they're retired and I'm not.
Re: Thank all of you!
Those Wagner loaders sure won't win many beauty contests!
A case of pre-design construction perhaps, or maybe someone drew it on a fag packet and they built it.
Maybe strong though

...No, I haven't even called. I bet it would be a good one however. That one sounds interesting. I wish they had posted some pictures of it. Have you seen it?
...BTW, Tim brought this one over to me on a trailer and my heart sank when he couldn't even get it started long enough to get it off and in my yard. Ether and many starts later we got it in place to work on it. I was one sad old man for a few weeks.
