Super major seal leak
Super major seal leak
On my '61 super major, I have a leak from the drain hole in the bell housing, suspecting it's gear oil from the front transmission. Is this an urgent job to be done or will it be ok for a while?

Is it pouring out? Or just an occational drip? Have you checked the Transmission oil levels lately? Dandy Dave!

Depends really it's not running like a tap, but will leave an egg cup full maybe if left standing, the level has not changed much in the transmission, I haven't long changed the oil in the transmission so it's fairly clean oil in there abs the oil that drips out is a bit dirtier
Re: Super major seal leak
It is probably not a problem at the moment, sometimes they leak when you first use them then stop when used regularly. Henrietta went nearly 20 years before I changed the seal when I overhauled the engine. Dotty had a leak as well when I first got her home but as she gets used regularly she does not leak at all now.
Keep an eye on your oil levels and she should get you through to the winter without problems.
What oil did you put into her? My oil supplier says that any form of synthetic oil will play havoc with the seals in these old tractors.

Hi brian,
I used Morris AG90 gear oil. I will keep an eye on it over the next few months.
