Hi all,
its been a while since I have been around but i had to share my amazment.
My girlfriend keeps horses, we recently moved them to a new yard. The owners wanted me to look at a Dexter for them so i said ok, when i looked at it, it is from JJ Wright & Sons (the same company that supplied mine), and the reg plate is one digit different from my Super Major.
Whats the chances of that lol, and I bout mine about 50 miles from where the horses are kept.
Just wanted to share that with everyone

Yup, It's a small world after all. I've run across things like that in the past. I once had a Cat model 10 parts crawler along with several others and ran across a parts book for it at a totally different place. Thumbing though the pages one day, I noticed someone penciled in a serial number. Yup, it was the tractor in the shed. Another time I was at a yard sale and bought a handcrank for an old one lung engine fo 50 cents. A number of years later, my dad bought a building full of junk at an auction about a half a mile from the tag sale, and piled under some lumber was a 1909 IHC Tom Thumb engine with a factory setup Myers orchard spayer pump that I ended up with. Yup, the crank was an IHC and fit. Reunited! At another auction 1/4th of a mile in the other direction from the tag sale years earlier, was a farm sale that my dad also went to. He came home with a box of stuff and in it was an original IHC spray wand that was the same vintage as the engine and pump. I always wondered if they started life together and was borrowed from farm to farm and a piece left here, and lost there, that is now reunited and in the hands of this collector. Dandy Dave!

Oh and while i think about it, I got it started but it idles very high and loads of grey smoke (DIESEL), is that unburnt fuel / diaphragm in the diesel pump???

Pre-Delivery Inspection.
Depends what pump you have, if its a vacuum governed, possibly diaphragm or the little breather needs cleaning on the governor. Check if you have a shut off tap in the line to the heater at the manifold and make sure that is shut off.

That is so "cool".
It is a simms pump, it looks like its got a diaphragm to me (from the outside), ive only seen the Super Major setup before......
This one only has one pipe going from the inlet manifold, to the pump.
Is it possible that the rack is stuck?
When the throttle is shut down it creeps up to about 3/4 revs, i would say...
When you pull the throttle open it revs higher.
The only way to keep it idling is to hold the stop lever out just far enough.
Any ideas?
Dont know if any of that helps to diagnose the problem.

If we are talkin about the same thing, you need two vacuum pipes going from the inlet manifold to the vacuum house of the pump. It will not run correct with one pipe.

Dextas only have one pipe Henk.
Henk's picture shows the filter to clean, the little metal cover held in place with a nut in the centre.
If the rack was stuck it would hold constant revs not vary, or possibly not start at all. Did you check for a tap on the heater pipe? Dextas will draw fuel via the cold start pump into the inlet manifold and give the problem you are getting. So will a blocked breather on the pump and so will the diaphragm.

Sorry about being in the wrong board, it just kind of followed on from my original post.
I have been and had a look today and couldnt find the filter or tap that you said about Brian.
i have taken a couple of pictures / video to show you what its like.
When I went to it and started it for the first time, it took about 20 - 30 seconds of cranking to get her started.

The filter is slap in the middle of your second picture, mounted on the side of the pump.

I hate to say it Brian but you were right AGAIN!!!! hehe.
I removed the filter from the pump and it was full of black gunk, so I cleaned it and put it back and it idles nicely now, with no white smoke.
It does however idle a little jumpy... is that pump timing?

It is common for Dextas to idle up and down a little. See how it is after a little work.
