Rear Tyre Size - Dexta
Hi,
What size of 28" tyres can I fit to rims that are 9inches in the channel of the rim and 10inches overall?
Many thanks,
Ben

On 28" rims, you can put a lot of different tyres.
It starts at 11.2 and goes up to 16.9 in the series 85 (standard)
or 320 to 480 in the series 70
and even 440 ... 540 in the series 65
Now the tyre that will fit is depending on the rim-width.
a 9" rim will take :
11.2R28 (280/85R28) - Outer diameter = 1190 mm
12.4R28 (320/85R28) - Outer diameter = 1260 mm
a 10" rim wil take :
11.2R28 (280/85R28) - Outer diameter = 1190 mm
12.4R28 (320/85R28) - Outer diameter = 1260 mm
13.6R28 (340/85R28) - Outer diameter = 1300 mm (not always, depending on the manufacturer)
a 11" rim will take :
12.4R28 (320/85R28) - Outer diameter = 1260 mm
13.6R28 (340/85R28) - Outer diameter = 1300 mm
14.9R28 (380/85R28) - Outer diameter = 1360 mm
380/70R28 - Outer diameter = 1280 mm => this tyre often replaces the 12.4R28 tyre for lower ground-pressure
So, what ever fits, you can put on, but do not forget that the diameter of the tyre also changes !!!.

Ben,
More information can be found in the site of Czech Rubber Group ( Continental = Semperit = Barum = Mitas = Euzkadi) who produces these tyres

Can someone pleases clarify which of the rims Jos lists above corresponds with the part nos below (for item 6 in the Dexta parts list wheel diag):
D9NN1050BA - RIM Rim & Support Assy., Rear Wheel, Years: 01/01/1957-12/31/1964
C5NN1050F11G - RIM Rim & Support Assy., Rear Wheel, W/P/N 975E-1019-F Wheel, Years: 01/01/1957-12/31/1964
960E1037B - RIM Rim & Support Assy., Rear Wheel, 12 x 28 Tires, Years: 09/01/1962-12/31/1964
The same part numbers are listed for both standard and Super Dextas.
I've gleaned these from the Vugot website:

Recommended Rim Width for 28" Rear Wheels
I need to replace the rear rims on my Dexta, but hope to reuse my 12.4x28 tyres.
Given Jos' earlier post saying that 12.4x28 tyres will fit 9", 10" & 11" rims, what rim size do you recommend?
I'm wondering if the wider rims will give more options for bigger tyres in the future?
Your advice appreciated.
Many Thanks,
Ben

Re: Recommended Rim Width for 28" Rear Wheels
Ben,
when you check the manuals of the tyre-manufacturer, best fit is a W11 RIM.
A W9 RIM is also ok, but the tyre will look more round and more under tension.
A W10 Rim is very difficult to find , so just forget this.
If you can get W11 rims, you can put bigger tyres on, but the outer diamer also increases ! And at a certain diameter, the tyre will scrape against the mud-guard ...
Forgotten the size, but a 380/85R28 (14.9R28) tyre that would fit a W11 RIM would scrape the mud-guard already so here you need to go to a lower profiel 380/70R28 (the Conti AC70T tyre) and these are more expensive than standard 85 series tyres

Just by way of summary:
Assuming I reuse my 12.4x28 tyres, the options appear to be:
-- refit my tyres to new 9"x28" rims, where rim width is the internal bead width.
-- refit my tyres to new 11x28 rims, which were an original Dexta option. However I would need to be sure that the rim lugs match my original Dexta centres.
Many thanks for your help,
All the best,
Ben

The 9" rims were not a common option. Most people here had the 11" ones.
I don't think you have a problem with lugs as that rim is common to Ferguson as well as Dextas. I interchange the rims and wheels as a matter of course. The only differnce between Dexta and Ferguson wheels is the weight holes in the disc as far as I can see.

Thanks for the info.
Most of the suppliers I have contacted only supply 9" rims. So far only Agriline can supply 11", who said they might be 'too wide' when fitted with 12.4x28 tyres. Can you assure me otherwise?
So I had assumed that 9" was the norm. I'm interested to hear that in fact most had 11" rims.
Thanks,
Ben
Ben,
I have just been out and measured 2 Fergusons, a petrol Dexta and a spare rim. You are right, they are 9" bead spacing but all have 12.4/11x28 tyres. This was the standard tyre that we supplied when new.
Sorry for the confusion, I should have checked before I typed but it was -7 degrees out there this morning so I just typed first!
Nuffy and Henrietta have the same tyre size 12.4/11x36 on 11" rims.
With the 11x28 tyres they will still catch the mudguards in the minimum wheel setting position. You would need 10x28 tyres to avoid this.

9" vs 11" Rims
Brian,
Many thanks for the prompt clarification! It's cold in Berkshire too but the sunshine is nice
For an easy life, I think I'll stick to 9" rims
All the best,
Ben
