How to remove the oilsump

Post by nms-georg »

HI!
It's time to fix my engine. Took a look today how to start and realized, that I need to remove the frontaxle before I can remove the oilsump. Is this right is there any other way to get the sump down?
Thx George

I split mine a few years back to replace the rear crank seal. When I put it back together it still leaked oil and it turned out the sealing of the sump over the rear crank bearing was the problem. I then took the sump off without splitting the tractor or removing the front axle. Don't recall the details of how but I don't recall it being difficult.

You must take the weight of the engine with a chain block though as the sump is structial and there are stories of engine blocks cracking when the sump is taken off without support. And be carefull as being cast iron the sump weighs lots.

Thanks, will try :)

Do I need to lift the full front of the tractor at the engine or do I also need to support a bit under the gearbox?

If you chock the back wheels and support the weight of the tractor under the bell housing you can then remove the front axle. The front axle carrier/support is bolted to the front of the sump.

Take care when lowering the sump as it weighs approx. 27 kgs.

G'Morning!
Have started to fight with my oilsump. What I did so far:
- supported the gearbox
- supported the front axle (left and right side close to the wheels)
- lifted the weight of the engine with a crane
- removed all screws from the oilsump

And now? The Oilsump is liked glued to the engine. Is there a way to get it lose from the engineblock?
Do I need to use a hamer or how are you doing it?

are you sure you have found all the bolts? there are a couple well hidden in the hole at the back and also two nuts in the hole at the front.

I did all what you have so far, but i also put a trolley jack under the sump to take its weight, then slowly lower it down to the floor. I didnt have a problem getting my sump down, but like has been said, double check all bolts are out, you dont want to break the sump. I hit mine with a rubber mallet to break it free but if yours has been taken down before, it may have been siliconed in place, i would try and wedge a screwdriver in or a chisel and gently pry it down.
Oh yay, look, another seized bolt! Lets get a hammer.....and some kano.....and some cider!

Got it guys :)

Thanks for your help.

Yes, all screws have been away. It was just sticky after some years of usage. Used a piece of wood and a hammer from top and it started to come down. :)

Will keep you up to date tomorrow once I take a look "into" the engine whats wrong there...

Thanks,
George

I've had my sump off 2x and have never removed the front axle, have just jacked up on the flange behind the sump then put a block of wood under, never had a problem.
